so after i finally got all the body work done after my accident

shes back on the road. and running like crap.

motors skipping.

got code for cly 4 misfire. plugs are only 5k old. i swapped the coil packs and waited for the code to follow

CEL never came back...so i figured it could be the second CEL, for camshaft position sensor circuit A something. it was hit hard in the wreck

so i replaced that, the thing still runs like crap. right now im waiting for further CEL's. havnt gotten a misfire code since i swapped the packs on monday. ive been getting only the camshaft sensor code.

my newest theory is that the initial misfires could have been caused by the bad cam position sensor, then it over fueled and filed out the plugs. now that the cam sensor is good its still misfiring due to the plugs being ruined. any input?

as always any help that could be provided is greatly appreciated

thanks!

hard hit ej engine.

good god.. assume worst first, work your way back out.

I would even check for wobbling cam gears or crank end.

Umm, no worse if an EA82 was hit hard.

Anyway, he said somewhere that the timing belt jumped a few teeth an that's why it's running like crap.

like one tooth or more than a few teeth??? we all know what these motors are....timing off can be bad but ive seen people get lucky sometimes

yeah it was 4 teeth on each cam. got it back in time and ran MINT.

now more problems...

i was driving back to mass tonight, coming into the toll i heard a loud "thud thud thud" almost like a knocking when i was on the brakes. coming from passengers side wheel.

pulled over checked the wheels, felt tie rod ends sway bar linkes ect ect.

got increasingly worse. drove it about another hour, car was a little shakey. only making the noise when i was on the brakes

then it got louder, started happening every time i was off the gas.

when i got off the highway it was BAD. every time i was off the gas a very loud knocking sound, almost like something smashing the underside of my car. no longer coming from the wheel it seemed right under my seat or closer to the trunk.the wierd part is i can barely hear it when im on the gas, once i let off its VERY loud, alarmingly loud. once i get back on the gas it quiets right up...

any advice can help greatly..

thanks

Sounds familiar to what I had happen friday....

Get it in the air and get it spinning in first. Might be something in the trans.

Yes I did torque them on, sounds more like a driveshaft issue to you than transmission?
is noise originating from same side as the hit?

look at axle boots, are they torn and throwing grease around

with car on lift, test for play in axle...move wheel back and forth while you feel around the axle joints...ANY play means axe is done.

no its more towards the center of the car. started halfway through my trip on the highway, today on my way to work i noticed while idling, and rolling down hill slowly i heard a slow grind then knock. it got quicker as i gained speed.

check for bad bearing on prop shaft, look closely to see if propshaft has been hitting sides of tunnel

While Idling? Im no expert on Subies, but sounds like the destroyed motor mount I had in my last car. It was worse everytime that I did something that shifted the weight of the engine. Like stepping on the gas or brake, cornering, or even Idle once the mount was totally F'ed.

well well...

there's quite a difference between trying to suss out noises thru a forum based on verbal descriptions of mechanical noises (aka the Car Talk game), vs getting that car up on a lift and going over it stem to stern

any car that's been hit hard and repaired needs to go thru this stage. hell you'll usu find other things wrong that weren't involved in the accident damage at all.

did I mention, "Get That Car Up On A (*&^%#$%%@!! Lift With A Good Suby Tech Giving It The Eagle Eye" ??!!

man that sucks its one thing after another...

let me know what it is, i probably have the part. I have axles, a driveshaft, and even tranny parts (doubt its the tranny though).

remember you were just beating her a bit so i wouldnt be surprised if something let go.....as nigel said....get it on a lift...some shops do free vehicle inspections

Damn... i took a better look at everything at school today. left rear tire, one busted stud, 3 loose lugs and one cranked tight.

I tightened the other three up and the noise went away. im astonished, and quite embarrassed to be honest.

i havnt had those wheels off since September, i KNOW i torqued them back on. 110% positive, and havnt touched them since then.

the only time the car was out of my sight was friday night, 11PM in the parking lot of biddeford Walmart. maybe someone thought about taking my stock wheels? or just felt like being a douche?

I suppose its good that it turned out to be something stupid, as opposed to serious and costly. either way its embarrassing and i hope that next time i come to you guys for help, which im sure will happen, you can still take me seriously.

Glad it wasn't something terminal.

Don't feel bad, we've all done stupid stuff. I know I've done enough to make up for people who haven't.
