Seems I will be buying a new TV sometime soon. I already have a 42" Samsung LCD, but i will be going bigger. . .. about a foot bigger actually.

the question i pose to you, is a timeless one.

Should i got LCD or Plasma? i'm not interested in LED, as the technology is still emerging, and the price will drop by 1/2 over the next couple years.

primarily, i will be playing PS3 on it, and enjoying BluRays. i am familiar with the the advantages of a 600hz refresh rate on a plasma, as well as the fact that a plasma can provide a blacker black than a LCD can. (without going into the $2500+ price range)

i like my lcd, but i am interested in the picture quality and refresh rate that plasma has to offer . ...

I have one of each right now. And for speed of recovery, and picture quality I enjoy my plasma more.

I say plasma, UNLESS: the tv is going to be used with a lot of light interference. We went with an LCD Samsung because the kitchen area just lets in way too much light to use a plasma. Would I have had my parents buy the plasma otherwise? Definitely.

Plasma does NOT have a burn in problem nowadays, so don't even worry about it. I still wouldn't recommend that you leave a single image on the screen for a long time, just in case. The only thing I'm not sure about is the life of the screen.

Plasma, by contrast, uses a small electric pulse for each pixel to excite the rare natural gases argon, neon, and xenon (a k a "phosphors") to produce the color information and light. As electrons excite the phosphors, oxygen atoms dissipate. These rare gases actually have a life and fade over time. Manufacturers of plasma have estimated the life of these phosphors to be about 60,000 hours. The life of the plasma display itself is usually determined by half-life of the phosphors. So at 30,000 hours the phosphors will be at their half-life, and the viewer will be seeing an image that has half the brightness capability that it did when originally purchased. This should be a good point at which to consider its life over. The gases in plasma TVs cannot be replaced. There is no phenomenon of "pumping" new gases into a plasma display.

as stated above if there is a lot of light in the area i woud stay away from a plasma with a glass front for refelction reasons

u need to go with led. yes in 2 years the price will drop a lot but by then there will be somethign better than that. if you want the best you have to spedn the money on it. get the led and be on the cutting edge!!

them led tv must be pretty bright and we have a friend who repaired them and i can't remember which one he was saying but it runs very hot which ends up shortening the life of the tv

Plasma gets my vote. It will be heavier and hotter than an LCD but I'm sure you already know that.

Close the curtains. You don't want the neighbors seeing how much time you sit in front of CoD anyway.

I have a nice samsung LCD and I love it...but the same TV I bought for $900 in the spring was on sale for $650 this past Christmas...no matter what you end up getting, there will be something better for less money this time next year.

I've researched this myself recently. Nate hit all the important points. Technically the plasma is better, richer picture, without the burn-in like previous years.

HOWEVER, plasmas still have terrible glare from any light at all. If you have any kind of sun light in your TV room get the LCD. Consumer Reports state that the Plasma makers have "screened" the screens for glare problems but I have yet to see any non-glare plasmas on the show rooms yet.

Dont compare models at Wal-Mart. Their displays are half-assed installed with the settings messed up by customers and cheap0 cables. But you can compare the the lcd v. plasma screen reflectivity. The LCDs have a nice soft display while the plasmas will show the 300ft reflection of the interior of the store.

thanks for the input fellas. i've been leaning towards a plasma for a while now.

it will be living in a 100% sunlight free room, and i am not all that worried about the burn in. .

my next tv after this will probly be an LED, or maybe an OLED if they are ready by then.. ..

Any feelings towards brands? I know many companies tend to do one thing, and do it well. For example, I love my samsung lcd, and from what I hear, lcd is their "thing"

Oh, and I will not buy anything from panasonic. Long story

I don't know if it's "actually" any good I like my LG. It did break under warantee and was repaired though.. something to do with a power supply.

I know that you should stay away from Vizio...I burned through two last spring before I bought the Samsung. I think that either a Sony or a Samsung is your best bet.

haha, +1.

plasma can still burn in with long periods of the same image. i.e. passing out drunk on a ps3 menu after a 14 hour binge on CoD

Too bad Pioneer left the plasma market. They were leading, and the new plasma tech is so awesome I wish they were still producing panels.

+1 for Samsung and Sony. I think that the menu systems on the Samsungs suck. Just go in to best buy and try a few out from each brand, meaning go through all the menus to make sure it "feels" right to you.
