Need MacBook repair

My son's 1 year old Macbook crapped out.

issues:

* disc drive stopped working

* 3 months later got a gray screen, nothing worked.

My son put in a new hard drive. Now we need the operating software loaded but the disc drive still doesn't work. Is there a way to load the software via USB?

1) Does anyone know how to fix disc drives on Macbooks?

-Or-

2) Can I load operating software from one Macbook to another via USB, we have 1 that works and this dead one. Disc drive is hardly ever used.

3) Do I need to do something else?

4) Anyone want to fix this? How much?

I have a USB to IDE adapter, but I don't believe you can boot from it. How does Mac OS installation work?

Otherwise, there is a way to install the OS from a second computer hooked up over USB (or firewire, but maybe just firewire). I had a friend do it a while ago, when the OS disk was a DVD and his mac only had a CD drive.

Try 987687868549584 or whatever his name is hes always talking about how he has 15 mac books laying around and his 1337 computer repair skills.

Shoot me a PM. I'm the mac guru in my business. (and the only employee heh

) I run a macbook that's literally held together with electrical tape and superglue.

You work in computers? Always nice to find a fellow geek.

Mostly tech stuff? Or engineering? I am a currently working as a C/Java/PHP/MySql developer but my background is in Embedded C and such. You?

I program. C, C++, I can do, but can't stand java, I can do enough php to make things pretty with websites and make MySQL happy.

I do a lot of linux stuff, I have my own server running all the apache, php, etc, and I run qmail on it for a mail server. I do networking, running linux on routers, etc, etc.

But working on macs is easy and fun

Loaded entire contents of good Mbook to external hard drive, now uploading to sketchy Mbook...along with my secret stash of pirated music.

How'd they find that!?!?!

Hopefully it works. Still might have dead CD issue. Sheesh this takes a long time.

I've pretty much found answers 90% of the time of the mac support forums. And if worse comes to worse and you just want it fixed, the place across from Holy Cross Church on 196 is a certified mac repair place. I had my 24" imac fixed there under warranty and they were super helpful. Definitely beat driving all the way to portland.

website sucks and the place is semi sketchy inside, but they're good people

yea, the apple discussions board is pretty good. You'll find me on there too

I know I am gonna get flamed for this but I hate Macs with a passion. My solution? Hit it with a baseball bat a few times. If that doesn't fix it, get a PC Desktop and order cheap replacement parts with good reviews from Newegg. I also never use an antivirus, they cause more problems than they fix if you are a sensible computer user. I remove viruses manually. Always have more than 1 computer so you can have one to look up how to fix any problems that do pop up (Ussually software conflict related, due to the millions of apps available for PCs). PCs are cheaper IMO because they are more common, and so are thier parts and repair solutions because any ID10T with some time can fix one. Also they get more viruses and malware because people don't bother to write viruses for Macs because there aren't enough of them for the virus to efficiently spread. Which would render a virus useless. Also everyone likes to talk about how reliable Macs are but they brake at least as often as PCs and cost more for the brand name labeled parts. Macs are better at photography and music why? Because Apple had to focus on something and PCs already had cornered the market on all the money making worthwile Ideas. So apple says, lets make our computers appeal to "alternative thinkers" and "creative types" and all those other people that don't use thier computer to make a living. I really dislike Macs. I also don't like how the Maine school system prepares kids for a life of using PCs by training them on MAC. How many law firms and engineering firms and doctors offices and auto repair facilities use macs? Which leads me to another point, there is not as many software options when it comes to Macs. Sorry guys, my beliefs are pretty firm. End Rant, let the flaming begin.

I'm sorry I don't feel like reading that rant. But macs don't suck. The system is based on BSD which by default makes it better than windows which is based on some useless DOS.

BSD huh, blue screen of death? JK!!! that's fine if you don't read it. I was kinda hoping everyone would ignore it anyway, I got carried away with simply posting that I hate Macs. Just ask RangeleyRallyDG, his family owns nothing but Macs. I argue with them about it all the time, but never expect them to listen. To each his own. BTW, windows hasn't been based on DOS since WindowsME.
