new to ME - Augusta

Hello all,

Figured I'd join in here since I've recently (1 week ago) relocated with my wife to the Augusta area (Whitefield).

I'm new to subie's and to ME.

Looking forward to meeting members on meets/cruises! I'm coming from a honda bckgroud and still have my EG with me (needs lots of tlc but can't get rid of it).

Looking to learn more about awd & subaru's.

Few pics below.

Little to no mods at the moment. Stg1 and some minor interior/exterior mods.

I did run into a little pickle 4 days ago that I am trying to fix/figure out and would much appreciate some input from other members:

Went to Charlie's subaru for my "first official" service. Everything went well and I was pleased with the service.

However, i noticed what seems to be a boost leak on my way home (significantly louder "woosh"/spooling sound than before after a WOT run passing a car).

The tech (can't remember his name) was kind enough to look at it and briefly check the upper hoses, drove the car and told me that it sounded "normal"....

I know it doesn't feel and sound "normal", and I know i am not reaching peak boost as I used to a week ago. With that being said, and assuming it's a small boost leak, here are the scenarios I'm thinking about:

Asking for a second (real: i.e. take the time to look under the tmic for example) inspection/check at the same dealership (make sure it will be under warranty)

or

find another perhaps more "knowlegable" subaru tech in a different dealership (patriots? but it's 1.5 hrs away)

or

spend the $70+ for the bulletproof tmic mod and find someone to help me install it

or

Have a knowledgeable subaru tech/garage/tuner diagnose it and fix it (i'd be happy to pay someone a reputable tuner/tech to help out)

Looking to hear peeps' comments

Cheers! sorry for crappy cell pics

Welcome. I grew up in Alna, the next town to the south of whitefield. Where in whitefield are you? I'm right in Jefferson now. Car looks great!

Welcome and nice car! My guess is the throttle body coupler to intercooler, but hard to say without looking. Have you had the intercooler off for any reason? Those couplers are notorious for leaking for no good reason.

If you want to try another TMIC I have mine in the basement. It didn't leak when I took it off. I'm with Joe though, I bet its the TB/IC coupling right at the TB.

Welcome to the club. Car looks awesome. Boost leak is unfortunate. If you don't mind traveling I'd always suggest Mikeymeyagi on here. One of the best technicians i know.
This. He's great. Knows his stuff and is extremely reasonable in price.Welcome aboard btw. Nice ride. Get some Lobster plates when reg is up... It will look good with the WRB!

Thanks for the repies guys!

Where's that 'Mikeymeyagi' located (info?)?

Yeah, I'm thinking i'll just call the Charlie's dealership and state that "i'm still having issues with the boost" and ask them to properly (i'll try to say it nicely of course) inspect the different TB/TMIC/Turbo hoses to make sure they are properly secure & tight.

And no, the IC has never been off. Other than some tlc in the engine bay once in a while, no mods done to the bay.

And I'm on Hollywood Blvd, off 194 (I know, crazy name for a dirt road! lol).

ill check out the member map

No kidding. I used to live on the Alna end of that road for a while. I know that road well!

And Mike is located in Standish, about an hour an 20 minutes away.

Welcome to the area! I work in Augusta and live just west of town. I'll have to check out the pics when I get home....blocked here at work.

Update:

  • went a second time at Charlie's... spent an hour there. Same tech (as far as I know, he never took IC off), swears "all is normal" and "no leak". He even asked a friend who owns a 'stage 3 '11) to check it out. Good peeps, but same deal... nothing. Ended up leaving home with the same feeling that the car is not functioning quite as well as before
  • Tried to contact (both pm and text) Mike (aka muyagi) but no answer... does anyone know if he is around or if there is a better way to contact him?
  • I'm considering going to the Patriot's dealership and asking them to "inspect the car for a boost leak" even though far away from where I am...

I submitted data logs to Cobb (on Nasioc) and waiting for some feedback. 2 other members responded and suggested a possible boost leak (AHA! vindication), but I will wait from cobb techs before deciding drive 1.5hrs to a different dealership! I guess i could go a 3rd time to Charlie's and ask they remove the IC, but I'm not sure how I feels going back again!

thanks for the comments/replies guy/gals!

on your accessport, what does your D.A.M. say? if it's less than 1, it will start cutting boost. That happens from knock events(usually from bad gas). It pulls timing and creates less boost.

Check that real quick and report back. Hopefully you get this figured out.

Yeah me too.I'm hoping to get this fixed asap. I looked over my latest datalog and DAM is >1. Posted some data logs for Cobb to look over and their reply was consistent with a potential boost leak, essentially that the there was some extreme negative long-term fuel trims (A/F Learning 1) very different than the 1st pull done when all was working fine.

Here is datalog #1 (https://docs.google....TWE5V0ZhNnFSTWc) done in April, and the latest (https://docs.google....TjRObFE2eDY1OVE) for reference

Well at this point, i'm just trying to connect and setup a time with Meyagi so that he can have a look at it, hopefully Diagnose/find the leak and fix it.

Hopefully, that will get done before the oct 21st drive!

in the meantime, I stay away from boost as much as possible and drive like a grandpa! LOL... not that it changes from usual anyway!

i did have an issue one time with my wrx. there is a small vacuum line that goes from the top of the bpv to the intake manifold, and that actually popped off. That can also be the likely cause. It's hard to get to, but you should be able to follow the line to a little nipple on the manifold near the throttle body

although, that would cause a rough idle and positive fuel trims under vacuum
