Nissan Cube...

forester an a great option. i dont know your situation or needs. but ive always said that if it ever came to me having a second vehicle as a daily driver. it would be a xt forester for its performance and function.

square cars = kinda cool. I u gots to carry stuff, why not in a box?

small box = Nissan Cube

medium box = Honda Element

big box = Ford Flex

all of these pull off the automotive box, but do it with style.

as for what is "style" well, let's say the ultimate automotive box is a...box truck, but where'z the style there.

Heres some stylezzzz

LOL it's not going to be a second car, first off. I'm toying with the idea of selling me '96 and picking up a different vehicle so my wife can also drive when needed (i.e. drop me off at work and use the vehicle for the remainder of the day). I live 10 minutes from work, so logistically it's not an issue.

Secondly, the intent of the post wasn't so much to discuss what car is best suited for Redline's family needs - it was more a general "what do you guys think about this car" type thing that evolved into something else.

Thirdly, I'm not specifically looking for a "box" type vehicle. A p/u is out of question because it doesn't comfortably fit a family of 4 (2 car seats for at least another 8 years). I'm just wavering between a minivan, suv, crossover or a larger wagon.

Lastly, I'm not looking to buy something for quite a while. Perhaps not until next spring. I just can't see selling a perfectly operable car and getting something that might not be up to snuff in return. For those of you who remember my Forester woes, you'll know what I'm talking about.

LOL @ GClark.

When Nigel mentioned visibility in a separate thread, I'm sure that's not exactly what he had in mind. And again, style doesn't quite apply... much.

Toyota > Nissan in terms of reliability. The cube need not exist, the scion xb already does and is a better made car.

These cars are bizarre to me, it's like they're styled to get worse mileage by being a big underpowered brick. People say these things are economical but in reality they're quite wasteful. You can get a lot more car, AWD, similar mileage and something that'll be worth money in 5 years with the forester.

Nissan's small car reliability has been really good in the last 10 years. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one unless the styling turns you off.

My honest recommendation for your particular family layout would be the Mazda 5. I have not driven one but I have ridden in one for a little while. The off lease prices for them are pretty reasonable and the reliability is spot on. The sliding rear Door is an unarguable +1 when it comes to loading kids. And the styling is definitely a departure from the traditional minivan.

Granted the ability of Jen to drive a stick would open the door to many more economical car choices for the two of you. I know that is a battle you will likely lose, but the offer to learn on the otter is still open.

It's not so much a question of "can she be instructed"... it's more "will she let herself be instructed".

Since it's the latter, it is indeed a battle I will likely lose.

But yeah, the Mazda 5 is certainly high on the list. She loves Mazda's to begin with, specifically the 3, 6 and CX7. Throwing her a 5 would be a welcomed gesture.

OK, how'z about a leetle family negotiation (OK, power play)

He: OK honey, I think that all things considered we should get you a new minivan (aka beat up POS with automatic)

She: Umm, how about something a little more interesting... Mazda 5 lets say? (no effin WAY you are gonna stick me in a geek-O Mom-mobile!)

He: Great idea, I found a really nice Mazda 5 that has a 5-speed so it's super cheap on gas! The automatic ones are like $2000 more for equal age, miles etc (aka, learn the stick or we keel you, um I mean the automatic is a terrible deal and they tend to break down a lot etc etc)

He: ...and besides, Pedro will work with you on lerning the clutch and stuff.......in a Miata no less, how fun would that be?

best scenario, she loves the 5-spd, loves the Miata. You get the Mazda 5 PLUS a cool little scooter car with droptop (gets great mileage....

I'll have a 6 for sale for dirt cheap in about 12 months if you can hold off

Well I finally got to see a Cube in the flesh today...looks a LOT better in person than in pix.

Not much "Cube" to it at all, almost every line takes a subtle curve. Back end in particular has remarkable well developed curviness.

2 tumbs up from teh Nigel!
