Slight gear grindage

So since I changed the gear oil in my imp, I've noticed some slight grind in 4th and 5th, only when the tranny is hot (operating temp) and if I rush it. Every thing is peachy when it's cold or I rev match. spent all day in between missions reading up about it and on legacy gt someone said some synthetics don't function properly at operating temp, hard to believe, but let's go with it. I put in lucas synthetic 75-90 and only noticed this AFTER I removed the subaru synthetic. My tentative plan was to put in conventional 80-90 and a touch of lucas, and hope it's not a synchro job ( joel gave me a rough idea on that, big money) insight plz?

I'm thinking the Extra-S will help or heavier oil since you say its fine until warmed up. You should stop eff-ing around and just get a WRX.

find me an 07 rex with the same miles and pay the difference.... I'll be in for extra-s after my vacation next week

Well everything was just as I thought. I had to wait a coupe weeks before I could change it so I topped it of with lucas oil stabilizer and once it worked in it seemed better. Last friday I drained out the very expensive synthetic garbage and put in half quart lucas and the rest extra-s and it's been smooth as silk since. Now the synthetic is coming out of the engine

I've lost all faith in synthetic lubricants now... But I don't need a rebuild and that's what's important

Good! Check your MPGs and let me know if it changed much. I think the ratio with your combo is the key to your success. Just enough Lucas to help the Extra-S make the syncros react better like they should. I might try your combo in my son's car. His 3rd grinds and I dont want to rebuild that toilet. Plus 3&4 come as a set so its not a cheap one to get parts for.

I know that I can tell when my gear oil is on it's way out. I have the same issues....I gave up on the synthetic and last time just put the Advance Auto Parts store brand gear oil in and it's been good as gold.... And that's with 160k+ miles on my tranny/rear-end.

I've had grinds in 2nd ever since I had my Subaru gear oil changed out. Never had time to swap it during the school year.

I'll have to try mixing in this Lucas stabilizer stuff. How much oil do these 5-speeds hold?

not meaning to hijack the thread if I am, but I have some gear grindage sometimes when downshift into first when im getting to a stop light. I recently changed my gear oil with amziol severe gear 75-90 and I thought it would help but it hasnt made a difference in the issue. if I wait until I almost stop then go for first, it wont grind at all. did you notice this with your car iwagon?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but from '06 on, they changed the first gear and made it easier to to get into. I know in my '02 it was impossible to get into first unless I was at a full stop.

probably just a safety feature so you don't blow up the transmission trying to force it to 1st from any speed?

Now I remember, joel told me about that one day I was in his bugeye, so yes yours isn't synchronized from 2nd to 1st. Question resolved
