Right, and in 06 they changed it somehow and made it easier to get into gear by matching revs.

Thanks guys. Learned something new about my car today. I only try to get it into first under 10 miles per hour.

Correct Seph. 06+ manual trans are double coned (grabby teeth on both sides of syncro collars) syncros for 1, 2, and 3. Most of the previous Subaru manuals would end up having difficulty down shifting into 1st. The first gear grind and hard down shifting is due to worn syncros and your shaft gear stack has developed too much space in between stuff. The 06+ trannies are much better even though the layout is the same, gears are tougher, and syncro re-engineered for better up and down shifts.
Technically it is but just not as well as 06+.

inski hit it on the head. Everything else was completely wrong.
Rule of thumb is, do you have a 5 speed box? If yes then you can't downshift into first if the car is rolling. Only exception is some 06+ five speed boxes... For the most part all 06+ boxes are go, but a few still crunch into first while rolling.
I've had three damn boxes in my RS and none of them can go into first while rolling. It's just a subaru thing and not a deal breaker.
