Smart meters

Who the hell shovels a path for the person to read your meter??? I have never heard of this before. My only real argument about this is the fact that there will be many jobs lost. All of the meter readers that go to each and every house to read the meter, will be laid off if they have no other purpose in the field

 
The CMP spokesman said that the meter readers are entry level union jobs and may have an opportunity to move into other postions in the company. This could be company BS. I was thinking about coming to the podium and busting his chops but decided not to do so because all meetings are taped and played on Metrocast channel 26. I did not want video proof that I am an opinionated crazy old coot.

Yes there is a chance for this. But most have no other skill in this field other tan to read meters. There are others that can become contractors for CMP, and do some field work. But there will be many that there will just not be a place for.

 
Maybe a crrafty plot to cut down on the size of the union to work on eliminating it? I know they've been tryin to get rid of ours for years where I work

 
Read in the Sunday paper that around 3000 people have opted out. Some people are claiming getting dizzy, sick and can not sleep because of the new meters.

 
Not positive, but I beilieve Scarborough has opted out of the smart meters for now.(Along with some other towns) Personally, I feel they should leave them be until they can prove they are not harmful and/or secure. This could all be a bunch of crap, but better be safe than sorry, or else there will be a whole mess of law suits on CMP.

 
Personally I don't want the smart meter, but nothing is stopping CMP from just coming over when im not home and switch it. I havnt looked too much into it but what's the shelf life on the new meters?

To answer the question of what is stopping someone from hacking the system with average computer users not knowing about security... about the same security that is used in a credit card transaction. All it takes is to encrypt each meter with the same encrypting a wireless router has. If it was done right any identifying information for codes would be inside the box which is locked with the special tag. If nothing is allowed to connect how is it going to get hacked. The only problem I can see is what happens in rural areas where there can be a house each mile. WIFI won't work for that distance so it would have to be something along the lines of a hand held radio or cell phone.

All I can say is change will happen. It was Obama's big pitch. CHANGE. The world is becoming smaller due to technology and there isn't much that's going to stop it.

I used to work for the company that is installing the smart meters. A member of this forum currently works for the company that is installing the meters. If you really believe that they are harmful to your noggins, you may want to just go ahead and check yourselves into a mental health clinic right now. You're suffering from extreme paranoia, and you shouldn't be allowed out in public for the safety of all around you.
