Something doesn't look/sound right here....

So last night after driving around finding a parking lot that was slippery enough to mess around in, I finally found one and about 20 mins after drifting around I stopped hearing my bov release air and i wasn't able to step on it and throw it sideways very easily, so I pulled over. I then revved my car up a couple times to see if i could hear my turbo spooling up at all, which was a big no. All i could hear was a gross scraping noise, so i opened up my hood to a cherry red turbo. easily over 1000º . Scary crap. I let it cool off for about 25 minutes or so and it wasn't red anymore. Drove it home and let it sit overnight. Around 2:00 pm today i added more coolant because my turbo drained it to cool down the turbo.

pretty sure there was a coolant leak or something and the turbo wasn't getting enough to stay cooled. thankfully i have another stock turbo that i can put in.

well, i only beat on it for about 20 mins last night. only went above 5k rpm's when i hit some bare patches of ice. still doesn't sound good this evening. it sounds like the fins are scraping the housing. I'm taking it out tomorrow to look at it and put my other one in.

I'd change the oil ASAP. The turbo got hot and most certainly cooked the oil/got bearing bits in it. You don't want those eating up the bearings in your engine. Cooked oil doesn't lubricate well.

Do you have a catted up or down pipe? Loss of power and cherry red exhaust is often because of a flubbered up cat.

vvv great minds think alike

It doesn't matter when your oil was last changed. If it was changed at any point BEFORE this happened. It needs to be changed NOW. I don't care if you changed it before you left the garage and this happened. It ruined the oil and got bits of bearing in it. Change it asap. Cheaper than buying a new engine.

yeah, going to change it tomorrow while im switching the turbos over and getting a new O2 sensor for my downpipe. hopefully i can get a catless up pipe soon too. i don't want pieces of the cat going through my turbo either.

Ehhhhhhh. I believe beating on your car a bit is good. It roots out the weak stuff. Better break it close to home than 600 miles from home. Dunno how I found that out...

If you are pulling the turbo, it is not a big deal to pull out the up-pipe and gut it yourself while you are doing that. Basically the same thing as a catless one.

So took the turbo out, put the other one in, changed oil, added coolant. Didn't see any obvious signs of why that happened to my turbo...
