Thats it! Car finally died. M&A I might be coming around soon

start with fixing the wife so you can spend the money to fix the car.
^ that, x47.

what part of "quit trying to drive a sick car, GO GET IT FIXED BY SOMEBODY WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS WTF THEY ARE DOING" does OP not understand?

did it skip timing? I had an older Legacy that did the same thing while I was at a stop sign. You might want to check that.
that's a pretty darn good idea. Looking at price for parts again. See if I can stay around $2k for parts. We will see.

I just ordered a new Walboro fuel pump and filter kit. Plus I went ahead and ordered some brand new NGK one step colder plugs.

I'm not saying for sure that it did skip timing, but *IF* it did, it will cost well under 2k.

To check it you would need to:

1) pull the fans (and radiator overflow)

2) take off the belts

3) Take off the AC belt tensioner

4) Take off the crank pulley

5) take off the 3 plastic timing belt guards

6) turn your crank with a wrench until the mark on the crank and the belt line up on top and ensure that all 4 cams line up with their marks and each other (I don't have a pic with me or else I would show how they line up.)

Also the marks on the belt might be worn off by now so there may not be marks on the belt any more. If you put the crank with the mark at the top, the cams on each side of the engine will have marks that line up with each other. If they don't line up, then the timing is off.

Again, I am NOT saying that this is it, but it isn't that much work to check. The hardest thing would be pulling the crank pulley off.

stinate dont be a debbi downer. lol. Everyone on IWSTI seems to think its either my: plugs, fuel pump, or fuel filter. So last night I ordered. New NGK plugs, plus a new walboro 255l pump kit which comes with new filter.

you should just order a new cosworth long block and give me your engine and ecu for a swap

not to be mean but, with a car like yours how can you guess at whats wrong.Pay the extra couple bucks and get a pro to diagnosis it for yah.....my humble 2c

the resident MS posse and IWSTI can guess all day long, but a good tech will find the prob in a few minutes.

what is the resistance to calling in professional help?

Hard to find a good "Pro" as you call them there Nigel. Hence why I am so skittish on the motor rebuild. If I did do a motor rebuild and it went south and didn't hold up for along time I think my wife would divorce me for spending that much money and it not lasting long.

So I just learned something tonight. I had thought that the only filter in the tank was the filter before the pump. Never thought to check the filter after the pump. Found that it is commen practice on some higher modded sti's is to take the inline filter after the pump out and not even have it there.

The part number on the filter is 42072fe020 dang thing is $80 from SOA. Wonder what it would cost from evergreen.

Also, found out that the service life on the filter is 60k but sooner if you car sees high use and/or cheaper gas.

Seeing how my car just turned over 60k miles and it sees more power useage than a commen wrx/sti I think I fall into the 30k cat. So I should be lucky I got 60k out of it. Have to car evergreen in the morning see what they charge for the sucka.

Rebuild, schmebuild. You don't even know for sure it's needed. you've been 'trying this and trying that' for weeks now hoping you'll find a magic bullet. M&A or Evergreen can troubleshoot your car in a single visit. They can do a compression/leakdown and either put your mind at ease (if they find a relatively simple problem) or get you mentally ready to shell out $ on a rebuild because you'll KNOW what's what.

for that matter, why does a rebuild have to be such a project. that's what factory shortblocks are for. if politically/financially at home you can't go the Cosworth spending route, just make it as simple as possible. stock STI is not horrible, the more the car gets modded the worse your problems become down the line.

are you a slow learner or what?

I don't want to go with a factory shortblock because of eventually I will be where I am now. Hence, I know what I want to do. But, the cash flow is the big thing. I have the parts list ready. Just a matter of money. If you want to play you have to pay. So playing is not happening right now.

Plus I am not just guessing at what is wrong with car. They are educated guesses. I did grow up in my dads auto shop. But, I don't feel comfy doing the motor pull myself without all the parts, tools, and garage space. Other wise I would be all over top of it and save myself $1500 bucks.

I think my current problem is in no way connected to the engine burning oil. Just called EG and ordered a new fuel filter. Funny thing is SOA says that the 06 and up STI don't have a fuel filter. Candice couldn't even find one for the sti even though its there. I guess over on iwsti.com this is a huge problem that others have found. SoA says they don't have one but its there. Same part number as the wrx and the fozzy xt.

kind of like subaru saying it doesn't have a pcv valve. how can a company that built a car, not know how they built it?

Yes Nigel. Ordered new plugs regardless of them looking fine.

By the way M&A is going to do the work. That has been decided for awhile now. The thing is I love doing all the work on my car. This is how I learn more about things is doing it myself. I fix $500,000 machines so I think I can handle a car. More than capable just time, space, and tools is the problem.

So when I get to a point I feel like I am cann't do anything else I will hand her over till M&A. Till then I am keeping on keeping on.

I have a good feeling about the pump or the filter being the problem. We shall see come Friday when I slap all the parts in. My pump is pretty much out of the car. I have the access plate being held on by two screws to the tank. Just enough so that nothing can get in and no fumes can get out. I did the first pump in the car so exchangeing it is no problem. I have touched it before so I am an expert now, lol.
