The STI vs EVo Fact no one mentions

i was bored last night just lookign up articles about my car. In pretty much all of the comparisons the new evo won as far as performance ( we all know how amazingly horribel the new interior is and not to mention only a 5 spd). One thing never mentioned wich upsets me is the reliability. it wont matter if the evo has less understeer or a tiny bit faster in the 1/4 when it is in the shop being worked on. they have tranny problems time and time again and overall mitsubishi dosent make sold long term reliable cars. So i will gladly take my car againt an evo 50k miles from now and laugh when i see smoke coming from under his hood

The motors on those are way way tougher then whats in our sti's. The tranny on the other hand ...... is about the same as a wrx.

My family has had 4 evo's and the only one with tranny problems was the evo 8. It was covered under warranty. My dad currently drives a 08 gsr and believes the tranny to be relatively strong. As far as the motors in the evo vs sti, it almost always comes down to how the owner treats it. They are both great engines. The only reason reliability becomes an issue is due to the fact we spend so much effort modding them.

bingo!

the challenge with modding cars is to actually make them better than the factory engineers did, not just make em different.

so far my my mod score for street cars is roughly 50-50

for instance, a recent upgrade to poly bushings has def improved my waggie's on-off throttle reactions and made it more responsive to tossing the back around. But hoo baby is it LOUDER on the road. Impact harshness is noticeably worse, etc etc. The other day, I was cruising around with the g/f, she asked me (well shouted is more like it) "Why is your car so loud now?"

and as for reliablilty of stock gearboxes in heavily modded STi's?? Well the stock 6-speed is one of the toughest gearboxes Subaru has put out there yet, and they've proven (usually) capable of handling substantial HP upgrades. In fact, tswapping in a stock STi 6 MT is the standard solution for a rally driver who's having trouble keeping Suby 5-speeds in one piece. Canada's Pat Richard is a well-known example--he was eating up hellaciously expensive Prodrive dogboxes, and sticking in a plain old STi 6-spd cured his tranny woes almost entirely.

But really, where's the surprise when a 450-whp STi chews up gearboxes on grippy tarmac streets and strips? At least a rally car is launching on low-grip surfaces--Tim O'Neil always teaches to "slip the wheels, not the clutch."

neither of wich car we will see in the states. My other big problem with the evo u cant tell the differnce between a regular lancer and an evo. the differnces are so small. if im paying an extra 17k for an evo rather than a lancer u bet i would want a very noticable differnce body wise. plu sinterior all they do is put in tighter fitting seats

actually a sleeper appeals to some people.

like me.

I quite like the evos always have. I hate to be the devils advocate on a suby forum.. but when you leave them both stock they will run forever. Jappy engineering. it always works.

when you tune the piss out of either they are about the same. I have been around rally long enough to know that. the evo handles better out of the box (IX) but it is a bit more of a handful on the streets.

trade one thing for the other. just depends on what you want.

I like the evo's a lot and if I had to do it again I would go with one of those instead of the sti. I was never a subaru fan until I got my sti but I deffinetly am now.

Sounds like the GM, Ford & Chyrsler debate back in the 60`s. Just enjoy the car your with, mmm sounds like a take on and old 60`s song

I admit I like the EVO's and it isn't like Mistubishi just started making engines in the last decade or so...Didint they make all the engines for the Japanese war planes in WW2? Granted thier financial issues of a while back were sketchy but they seem to B better(ish) now.

I have liked them ever since I could not kill my parents 70's Dodge colt with the Mitsu 4 banger in it... damm we tried like all get up and go to off that thing but could never do it.

I wish Yota would bring back the Supra.....

pick up and issue of consumer reports and see how they liek any mitsubishi. they dont and haven't for as long as i can remeber. they aren't well built cars bottom line. to me consumer reports very rarely gets there ratings wrong

I do and don't trust consumer reports... they still think Bose' and Sony know how to make great home audio although CS was one of my best sales tools when I worked for Toyota... they obviously test with earplugs in as to not damage thier hearing... sheesh!

They know how to test in a sterile enviroment... kind of like how a car manufacturer used to come up with HP and mileage ratings...

Consumer reports is good if you are buying a used car as to what were the typical problems encountered relating to factory issues, not performance. They are good at picking out the best appliances although just about everything is crap today. Even Maytag is made in Mexico

HAH...

I just turned around to look at my washer and dryer...(sighs) yes my computer room/home office is also the laundry room!... IT used to B the prior owners craft room, has lots of closet space and froo-froo wallpaper... so I took it!

My kenmore appliances are made in Germany and the United states as far as I can tell....

Sadly enough there is also a huge warning sticker inside my dryer door adressing how bad it is to dry gasoline......Ok so I never thought dry gas was made exactly like that but whatever and I wonder what rocket scientist pulled some stupid pet trick to justify the need for said sticker...

Just probably one of many pork projects that the Feds payout for these ridiculous warnings we see all over the place.

the comparison is easy.

if you want to cruise and pick up chicks, drive and STI, if you want to cruise and pick up dudes, drive an EVO.

lol
