Thinking about changing vehicles.

Pm me and i will give you the low down on the 05 5MT legacy GT LIMITED wagon i just bought.
Very nice! You sir are a very rare breed. The LGT wagon is pretty hard to come by, enjoy it!

Electronic LOCs ???
I wish I could remember the technical name for them. They automatically adjust levels for you, so you don't need to do it yourself.

ahem...this thread seems to have taken a strange turn. I sincerely hope that the deciding factor on what car the OP buys is NOT based on the stereo system! ;>P smiley joke joke ha ha ok??!! [[but I'm not really jokin]]

Why, whats wrong with buying a car cause you like the tunes?
Especially for someone who isn't planning on modding a car, they should be happy with every bit of the vehicle, including sound system and creature comforts. It's too bad Subaru used such a terrible audio system in their vehicles and I had to go the upgraded route with things. There are little things that give me buyers remorse with this car. Sometimes I really with I just bought the 2007 S4 I was looking at. I would have been in a G37 if you could get the AWD with a manual, it's a pretty great car. I steered my mother into one over a 335, and she loves it. I took it out for a few drives and I could easily fall for it too. I just miss the little convenience features and creature comforts my other vehicles have had, but the Subaru lacks.

tunes are important, no doubt. but the thread started with questions about how other scoobs could be modded like the OP's rex. I was just commenting on how the thread had lost focus on performance and driving dynamics and gotten sidetracked on tunage. if a hot scoob comes with crap tunes, that's easier to deal with than a crap car with good tunes, that's all.

EH, I hear you. I was just trying to focus on all aspects of the car. Considering I own an LGT I can offer some good insight into what it's like to actually own one day-to-day. You are indeed correct., tunes are a fairly easy thing to fix. It would be even easier if we got all of the nice JDM options, particularly the McIntosh sound system.

^ missed the sarcasm
I was agreeing with you;)

OP, if fuel economy is important to you, think long and hard about whether you want an '05-'08 GT. The gas mileage from the 2.5L turbo is just atrocious...and it requires premium. The 'official' EPA figures are waaaaaaay optimistic.

Five years ago we got an '05 Outback XT...i wish we had bought a base or a Limited. The sucker is QUICK, but with straight highway driving (50 miles round trip commute on 295), my wife gets 20-21 mpg depending on the season. Around town? 17. And that's not getting into the boost. Awful awful awful.

Never another turbo Subaru...at least my WRX years ago consistently got 25mpg highway...and gas was half the price!

I was just wondering that. I can get 23-27 with my WRX and my wife gets about the same with her Outback.

Your Outback XT would have had the same motor as the LGT, right?

I have to wonder if the sedans are in the same boat.

The more I think about it, the more i come back to this statement:

Pick two:

Fun to drive

Cargo capacity

Good gas milage

Yeah, my WRX was usually 22-24, pretty all 80-90mph highway. Is your wife's Outback NA? I assume so with that mileage. I can't remember now if you were looking at a used Legacy GT or a new Legacy. '05-09? GTs all have the same engine as our Outback XT. Thus I ASSUME cruddy mileage. They might be lighter, but not by that much! The new Outbacks/Legacies are in a different world - bigger, better mileage.

I'm looking for all three of those criteria - fun to drive doesn't have to be superfast. I'll get a new thing to replace the Saab this summer, looking at:

Mazda5

Mazda3 hatch

Honda Fit

Ford Fiesta

Forester

All except the Forester are supposed to be fun to drive - just not speed demons. Good to great mileage from all. Lots of space.

both mine and bratmans forester xt's are fun to drive and both get 24+ mpg even with mods my blue foz got 27mpg when i first bought it and its a automatic now i get roughly about 25mpg with a cobb stage2

I can't afford a brand new car, or the Toxic XT, which I would be really tempted by if it was in my price range, so the newer Legacy's are out. After thinking, whether it's selling the wrx in a private sale or trading it in for something else and taking a little hit, nothing really makes any sense. All things considered, I have put a lot of cash and an huge ammount of time into making my car what it is. If I was to sell it, I would be really hard pressed to find a newer (05-07) WRX that has somewhere close to the same milage that mine did when I bought it and is in the price range that I can afford. And then I would be wanting to take it to stage II and get a set of rims, and, and, and. It would be a big waste of money to get rid of a car that I am only marginally un-happy about. I have ways to get around the need for more cargo room, and once I get the stage II parts back on, I'm fairly certain I'll be happy with it again. (I recently came to the conclusion that stock and somewhat stage I isn't going to cut it after all)

Edit: Just looked at the Toxic for sale thread again, I was thinking you where asking in the $18,000 range. $15,000 I could afford, but loan values, nada, selling mine...bla bla bla.

I definitely know what you mean!! If I hadn't gotten the deal I had from Gabe for my XT, than it would have been hard for me to jump into a newer Subaru, especially since I said I was never going N/A again because of the 2.5 HG issues. But if you're patient, and just keep looking, you just might find a great deal, they are out there!! And the Toxic is a good deal if you consider what it has. It's really only about 1500 above NADA/bluebook, which means you are getting A LOT more for not much more $!! But yes, that still means you gotta be able to fork over some cash up front. But yeah, it sounds like you got stuff figured out for now. Good luck!!

The sad thing is that other Foresters just don't do it for me. The only reason I like Gabe's is because of the tasteful mods that he has done. Just like my car, buying a box stock one and putting the cash into it to make it the way I want is way out of the realm of possibility.

I would diffintely be willing to pay the extra money for the Toxic XT because I have a full understanding of how much time, effort and money it takes to get a car to the point he has his. Private sellers don't get that and banks can't take "effort" into a loan calculation.

Sounds like your mind is made up and overall it sounds like the right move, you were going to end up loosing money overall to not get enough of what you wanted out of your new vehicle. As a LGT sedan owner I:

Get 23+ winter and 26+ summer a good split between back roads and highway

deal with the stereo, i have my audio input and i'm not an audiophile

like the pep of the turbo, and good braking after i upgraded

like the fit and finish over WRX interiors

love the AWD

love heated seats, leather and moonroof

love the overall look of the car (no huge boyracer wing)

Love the cost of ownership versus a4,s4,bmw, lexus

love the payment versus a4, s4, bmw, lexus

and cons:

Don't like how small it is but dont need the extra room yet

Dont like the interior vs something nicer s4, a4, bmw, etc etc

and a few other quirky little things but overall i love the car.

For the money, you cant beat and LGT for creature comforts plus performance IMHO.
