what can all you tell me about 02-03 OBS?

Im looking at traveling to NJ monday to buy a 2002 white OBS, its the 2.5 but isn't that the phase II 2.5?...meaning they had less headgasket problems right? just would like to know if people have heard of common problems to look for, thanks!!!

All na 2.5s will have head gasket leaks. 2002s are no exception. They may have already been done. Ask about it. Otherwise they're pretty rugged. Look into regular maintenance stuff like plugs, tires, brakes, timing belt. A car with a bunch of service history is a car you wont have to spend a lot on. If the check engine light is on make sure you dont have a bad cat. Those are expensive and impossible to find used.

Speaking of CELs, I suggest taking an OBD scanner with you and plug it in. When I originally bought my RS, someone had actually removed the CEL bulb from the gauge cluster. So...... NO CEL!! Neat trick.

thanks johnny but doesn't the CEL flash on everytime you turn the ignition on correct? so if if it doesn't flash on, its been removed...or am I wrong?

The only thing I would REALLY watch is the head gaskets. As said above, ALL 2.5's had issues!!! So make sure they were done, and with OEM gaskets, not aftermarket!!

this one has 188k and they haven't been done..SO if i did buy it, how much would it be to have them done?

obviously parts are cheap......its at 188k...so i would assume tbelt, wp etc are due, and since they have to come off to pull the heads...its a no brainer.....labor is expensive if you dont do it yourself.....whenever we pull a head we ship it out to have it checked and a resurfaced.....i believe you have to adjust the valves to.....

roughly around $1200-$1600 done right
So who can do them right for $1200ish near Windham? Just asking b/c my neighbor's 2.5L Outback is starting to overheat. We know what that means...

Mike, you neighbor's car is a DOHC and sometimes people quote more for those even though the labor time guide shows they are the same as the SOHC. They are a bit more difficult. Call Evergreen, the quote sounds like what we charge. Call around. Shopping is your best tool.
