One thing to realize is that most Subarus have less computer control systems (traction control, stability control, whatever the other brands call it) than most cars. When I gas it in the snow, I get no throttle cuts like in the family Nissans. This is awesome for me, but if a friend or my mom or whomever is driving my car and slips onto the gas, there's nothing to stop it.
2point5RS Dan is a strong supporter of good tires, and after driving my Subie this winter I'm definitely a believer too. Snow tires will be cheaper than a new car if you want to go that route (not that Subies aren't awesome, because they are!).
Sorry to sound negative about Subaru, but I don't want you to make any wrong decisions.
