I am kinda surprised that they didn't use the same brake shoes as the justy/any small subaru with drums already in production.

I feel dumb for asking this, but I will anyways...

Why don't car manufacturers integrate the e-brake system into the rear brakes themselves? Wouldn't it be more cost effective to have rear brakes that do both stopping and e-braking?

Someone explain this to me. Is it because of ABS or hydraulic systems?

My saab had a disk E-Brake. and it sucked. I believe most of the american cars with rear disks have the disk as the ebrake as well.

Same reason you use jack stands instead of just a jack: Because fluid leaks past the seals in the piston causing the braking force to reduce... Parking brakes have to be able to hold their clamping force indefinitely.

Well, I guess my real question is...

Why haven't manufacturers incorporated a cable into the rear brakes (in addition to the usual hydraulics) for the E-Brake. If you have the cable, then your problem is solved. All you would need to do is have the system over-ride the hydraulics when the cable is activated...

I dunno... needs some tweaking to be perfect, but I think it's a money saving idea. Just a thought.

That is the system GM had in the 80's-mid 90's. The cable would pull a lever on top of the caliper and it would mechanicly push the caliper piston out. The calipers and cables constantly seized up. The calipers were very expensive to replace and were not made well. The cables were pieces of crap as well.

This probably would have been a good system with a little more R&D but GM doesn't believe in R&D. Just sell it to the public and let them find the problems.

Subaru shoes last almost forever if you don't drive with the park brake on...
