Unfortunately there is no real independent party so its either higher taxes and bigger government or lower taxes and less intrusion.

The problem with the Liberal/Conservative issue is this:
1.) Elect a liberal, and you are pretty much assured you are going to have tax increases, more funding for senseless programs (and some sensible ones, too) but you will get progressive laws passed through.
2.) Elect a conservative, and you're assured the opposite. Typically speaking, anyhow.
There is no "middle ground"... people may think that "Moderate" is a category, but the reality is that it doesn't actually exist. The problem with moderate politicians is they stick their finger up their ass to see which way the wind is blowing. Someone with a "grey area" ideology usually comes with a mixed bag. There may be a good amount they actually have their feet planted on, but there are quite possibly many issues that make them "hit-n-miss" which IMO is more dangerous/risky than going with a straight-laced candidate.
By "straight laced" I mean direct, least complex, straight forward. While the human element makes this arguement a difficult one, the basis of it is quite simple. Elect an official that is hard set on a certain path, and at least you'll know what you'll get from them.
Mainers (and I can say this because I am one, at heart and upbringing) have this mental deffiency that keeps them from electing people who will be consistent. Instead, they vote for the squishes who cave to lobbyists and special interest groups that in turn fund their campaigns through backdoor advertising and support. Maine is a special interest group state. Law makers _know_ that the only way to get a law passed in Maine is to create one.

TPH is correct. Polarizing is what is killing this country.

I would say the _lack_ of polarizing is killing the country.
People preach tolerance and acceptance, but what actually ends up happening is the minority becomes the majority, causing the majority (tax paying, blue collar, family-oriented citizens) to become frustrated with the system that takes from their hard-earned dollar and gives freebies to those who are not willing to pay into the very system they withdraw from.
Social Security is crashing because of mis-appropriation. Gov't is actually getting the money they need. They are just spending it on unnecessary programs that concentrate on promoting minority interests. Gov't red tape is over-flowing into the programs that are put into place to attempt to compensate for the lack of time parents are able to spend with their children.
Check out this model:
Parent's aren't able to make ends meet because of cost of healthcare & taxes
As a result, mom and dad both work full time
Because they both work full time, they get bumped up a tax bracket and end up putting MORE money into the system
Their children are sent to after-school programs to keep them busy until Mom & Dad get home
These after school programs are funded because Mom & Dad work full time
The taxes, generated by the new income bracket, are easily enough to balance out the cost of day care & after school costs
Basically, Mom & Dad are working their tails off so they can pay for the programs their children are a part of so they don't have to watch them so they can work their tails off more to pay for the taxes they are drowning in and the healthcare they can barely afford, so they can stay in the house they can barely afford because of the taxes levied that "pay" for the schools, gov't, red tape, programs, low-income health care etc.
The system is getting worse not just because of those running it. It's getting worse because it is a system set to fail. When you create a system that penalizes the people who earn a better income by taxing them more heavily, you are hurting the work ethic. Why should I bust my tail so I can pay into a system that doesn't provide me with services because I'm not falling into the "poverty line" on paper??
Just some thoughts... dis-organized at times.

At the risk of pi$$ing someone off (liberals)end this tree hugging, touchy feely, you can't say that to me or I'll tell and get you in trouble, label me this or that crap. When I was growing up it was drilled into my head you will stand on your own 2 feet, you will not live beyond you means, you will not ask for help. Say damn near what you want people need to toughen up, I get called every name in the book and then some oh well it's just words. Or little Timmy has ADD bull$hit Timmy is a retard and needs a smack to pay attention christ when I was growing up damn near all of us would have had that label at one time or another. Living beyond ones means is the American Way. Why do you think Visa & Mastercard portray people who pay cash in commercials as the dumbass who farks things up? They WANT you to spend. They WANT spending to be easy. They WANT you to be strapped to BUY BUY BUY that you can't pay for your kid's daycare so you quit your job and go on welfare. Corporate America is sucking the $$ out of the people and putting the burdon on the government which has to raise taxes and issue bonds to pay for infrastructure maintenance.
ANd since Little Timmy has to go to day care every day followed by after school programs and never gets to spend time with mom & dad he becomes a hellion. What's the answer to that? Drugs! Put the kid on drugs! He's hyperactive... But rather it's cuz he's not getting enough parental attention & exercise. Pharmacutical companies love it. They want everyone to be on maintenance drugs. F that. F teh government for catering to big business corporate america. They're f*cking us all in the long run

I got in a fight w/ one of my girlfriends over this homeless stuff a while back...
She got mad at me because I said the amount of homeless in this country is LOVING bullshit, and that I don't pity those who don't try to help themselves.
She, who has worked in a homeless shelter on weekends before, was all "Not everyone can help themselves."
Which, yes, is true... but for every one person who's genuinely down and out, there's another 3 or 4 who are just too LOVING lazy to get off their ass and help out like the rest of us...
She disagreed, until I asked her where other than portland she's ever seen a homeless person, her answer was nowhere...
To which I responded about the bums in philadelphia.... who'd rather stab you, and steal your hard earned, than collect their own hard earned.... so basically she didn't know what she was talking about lol.
But yeah, building ANOTHER homeless shelter is just promoting them to not LOVING try for themselves...
What they should have built, was like some type of business where it'd be easy for a bum to get a goddamn job at, then walked to streets and offered any homeless person they saw a position, and a cot in the basement until they could get on their feet...
