2.2 Thread

Who can bring me a wealth of knowledge about the trusty 2.2?

-How much boost can they hold stock?

-If you were to build a 2.2 with something like a vf39 or 18g turbo, something along those lines, what parts would you use, a stock turbo 2.2 intake manifold? an aftermarket?

-I've been reading about mating wrx or sti heads with the 2.2, what kind of frankenstein piece would this create?

-Are there plenty of aftermarket choices for a turbo 2.2 like FMIC choices and the like, or would the piping need to be custom fabbed?

-If you created a hybrid 2.2/wrx how would the SOHC vs. DOHC work?

-What if any transmission would be the best bet to pair with something like this? Outside of the sti 6 speed, are there any years that are stronger than others?

-In the end, would a stock wrx 2.0 setup be better?

If any questions I ask either above or below make me sound like a retard it's because of my lack of knowledge on the subject.

Sounds like I'm going to be better off getting STi or WRX heads/intake mani/ecu/maf and slapping those on my 22t block. If you're doing a swap, the 22t is OBDI, so if you put it into a newer car like mine, you'd want to just use the block and make it OBDII. The stock heads for the 22t don't flow well at all and if you change the heads, you're likely going to need to swap the manifold as well.

Mark, before I share my 2 cents... are you talking about the 2.2T closed deck motor, or the ej22e open deck N/A engine??? This will make a big difference.

thanks spin, i was wondering what ecu you'd use as well.

i'm not very well versed on obdI versus obdII, but can you drop an obdI 22t into an obdii car at all?

my first suggestion is... sti internals in a 2.5 block. You can do this for ~$400

but on the topic of ej22t...

-the stock inlet manifold is just fine. Unless you want to run a topmount, in that case find a turbo specific intake manifold.

-The stock block is plenty capable of holding boost and making power. I don't wanna throw any numbers around as I don't know first hand, but there are plenty of people out there running vf39's and 18Gs on that block.

-sounds like your doing the right thing researching head swaps. the N/A SOHC and DOHC heads work, as well as various turbo specific heads. One major concern is what a head swap will do to your compression ratio. I know the SOHC N/A 2.5 heads give a compression ratio of like 7.6:1. That is way too low for my tatse.

If I were going this route... I would find a 2.0 wrx swap with a blown block (for cheap), swap in the 2.2t block, run a 16G turbo (or either that you mentioned), and find a 4.44 tranny and rear end out of a turbo forester. I would open source tune and go FMIC. That would be pretty quick.

I'll reply in detail later when I have time to go into detail, since i've done the swap with great results.

You can ... I did. Thing is, if they are checking for emissions, good luck getting a sticker. If your car came OBDII from the factory, you'd better keep it OBDII. However, like stated, using the block, you can make it OBDII.

is this an issue an maine? i know in mass you'd get the stink eye but i've never really needed to deal with inspections in maine

i'm thinking about buying a 22t and building it on the side without a car to put it in yet. does this seem asinine or fun? my votes on fun but what the hell do i know.

meanwhile i'd search for a 2dr impreza 97-01 that's got engine or tranny issues. this could keep me busy for awhile.

keep in mind most posts i do with my future plans result from boredom at work.

by the way imprezah the tranny/rear end out of an XT is the best sounding idea i've heard so far outside of the jdm sti 5spd 4.44. and chances are those are similar anyway

I think it'd be pretty sweet. Tinkering with a 2.2t on an engine stand until you find a car to drop it in. Plus once you get it all together you can autocross or rallycross it.

that's kinda what i'm thinking. i don't have a great overall knowledge of engines and i'm thinking this would be a great way to dive in. i did rebuild a CSB in high school for a shop class but i slept through most of high school, that included

I honestly wish this is what I had done. I say do it.
