Aux out mod for '99 Tape Deck

I want to add an MP3 cable to my stock head unit. It's a single-din, tape and radio only. Sound quality is OK with a tape adapter, but I think it could be better without the crappy adapter.

I have an extra RCA audio to 3.5mm (headphone) cable, but I doubt its going to be as easy as plug 'n play.

The other thing is that I can just install a Sony Xplod thingy we have. External 10-CD but I wouldn't even use that. It has RCA inputs in the back.

I know I'll have to take out the head unit either way, so I'll start with asking for instructions on that. Searches on google and NABISCO have come up empty.

Thanks in advance!

You mean aux in, not out. But besides that, it is possible. If it is like the stock one in my car.

I took it all apart and did a bit of reverse engineering. Found out some point in the middle of the digital sound track to the amp. I the created an analogue converter so I could plug my mp3 player in to it. But my stock head unit never really worked well, and it eventually died. I got a new head unit, and with minimal soldering moved the aux in port that is on the front to the back.

And note: the only reason I sent hours figuring out the electronics inside the stock on was because I was bored at college ... It really was a complete waste of time and isn't worth it.

So in order to get the Sony to work in my car, would I need a new harness, could I match up the wires, or could the two harnesses work together?

And yes I meant aux in.

It is pretty easy. I think my new head unit is a JVC. The radio comes with a harness and bare wires, then I got the harness for the subaru plug. Matched up which wire went to which wire, and soldered it together. I guess you could use wire crimps too, but I prefer soldering. But it wasn't hard at all. Just matching colours and soldldering.

So I need to buy another harness? I thought the point of ghetto-splicing the wires was to avoid buying a harness altogether.

You get the harness that plugs into the radio, and the one that plugs into the car. Then you have to solder them together.

They can't make an adapter from their radio to every single different car. There'd be thousands.

I remember plugging the Sony into my dad's old Honda was very easy. The hardest part was opening the dash up and routing the wires for the 10-CD holder.

Last I checked your subaru isn't an old honda

No, the point of buying the harness is to avoid ghetto-splicing. Don't mess with the stock wiring. Every time you cut a stock wire, you're greatly increasing the chance that something can go wrong with it down the road.

Buy a new HU.

I recently got a single-din, Kenwood 993X with aux in, USB in, Bluetooth with A2DP wireless streaming from iPhone>HU. 50w x 4 deck amp is marginal, but drives OEM speakers better than the OEM "amp".

$300 at Dr. Stereo, plus install. I added a 12" excelon sub w a 1000w excelon amp I already had. I love it!

Well the thing is that I would be looking in the sub-$100 range, and quality wise they will probably compete with this sony.

BTW the sony has aux in already which I never knew. Where can I pick up a harness and how much are they?

Ballparks: 50 to 100 for a stereo, 20 for the wiring setup.

I think I paid $13 for the subaru harness. Check craigslist or unclehenrys for head units, you may find a good deal on something decent.

^ good point on the used market.

But still, $13 and using the sony is not bad.

So I found one amazing deal and just want to run it by any audio gurus:

-Two Pioneer 16x9 speakers (I believe they're component speakers which I kind of wanted to stay away from, but there's no pics so I don't know)

-Two Polk Audio 8" subwoofers in sealed boxes (what are advantages to unsealed enclosures?)

-One 600w Amp, no brand given

$50 for all of it!

So if I got this stuff, the speakers would go up front, the subs would probably get stashed under the front seats if they'll fit, no idea on the amp, I'll get a better head unit, and I'll get a harness for $20 or less. That should be $70ish if I use the sony and $100-130ish if I buy another head unit.

ideas?
