Axles Axles Axles

Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the wheel bearing seals while you have it apart. Good to hear that you at least got one side to come out!!

Worked on it until I couldn't feel my hands last night. Front axle still wont budge. Air hammer + regular hammer, nothing.

I'm working on the rear end tonight and just PB'ing the front stuck one.

Got the rear diff out. Driver Front, stuck. Driver Rear, out. Passenger Front, out. Passenger Rear, stuck. FXT axle #1 separated from hub. FXT axle #2 still stuck to hub.

Turns out my rear axles are male on both ends, wasn't expecting that.

When I pulled the rear axle, I noticed that the front ones seem to have teeth (for abs sensor?) around them, yet this back one seems liked the teeth all rusted off. I compared it to the FXT axle they seemed very similar.

RS top, FXT bottom.

I think I should double check my rear hubs with the FXT hubs to make sure those teeth are/aren't supposed to be there. The teeth on the front axles are fine. If they're necessary, it could prove as to why my ABS freaks out since the sensor doesn't have the right readings?

Also, this little guy popped out when I pulled the rear RS axle...

Going to give this sucker a try tomorrow, if that fails, its either sledge hammer, torch, or take them to buddies shop with a 5 ton press.

snap ring for inner shaft i believe......did you buy that from vip??? if you did..take it back its junk

Going to pull the hubs out tomorrow and take them to my buddys shop. 5 ton hydrolic press will be victorious.

Adam + Joel of EG plus Mikey helped me figure out my axle issues. I had an inner C-clip pop out, and for some reason none of my axles + diffs have rear circlips on the axle stub... I looked inside both diffs and didn't see anything, but then again I don't really know what I'm looking for.

I'll work on it more tomorrow. Got other stuffs to take care of today :|

don't the pointed indents on axles mean gear puller point to insert into it?

I got an 8 inch one just for this...

the tighter those are, the better...unless you find bearings are too hot.

bear with it patiently, must be worth it..

Blew the gear puller up into a million pieces this weekend. No suprise there.

Pulling the hubs and pressing them out. Now all the other bolts are seized. So I'm slowly PB Blastering them throughout the week and I'll dig the Oxy/Ace out of the shed this weekend to free up the bolts. Once the hubs are out, it's off to Portland to use a buddy's 5 ton hydraulic press.

I miss my rally car :|

Man, I have never seen axles stuck in a hub that bad. I have done more cv axles on these cars than I can even count and have never seen one stuck this bad!! Good to hear you have a press to use though

Front hub is out. Blew up the ball joint and broke the head off the bolt in the hub for the ball joint. Will have to press out axle, and machine out that bolt to make way for a new one, along with new ball joint.

Rear strut bolts and trailing arm bolts are out, but the lat link is 19mm and I shattered the impact socket I was using with my breaker bar....

Pops is getting another metric impact set tomorrow. We also managed to get the air compressor working at full capacity again, the lines were done froze up.

Once the rear is out, it's remove the drum assembly and tone wheel then press both front and back axles out in da press.

Saturday is purchase parts at EG day. So far I need....

Front drivers ball joint, front camber bolt? Throw out bearing for FXT assembly, Possibly circlips all around for the axles?

Knowledge dump in the next post...

My FSM says the driveshafts between turbo and non-turbo are different.... Hope this wont be an issue as all I have is my NA driveshaft.

Here is the rear axle assembly. The part I have circled and arrowed is the INNER part of the axle, NOT the hub side. Supposedly on that notch a circlip goes on there? I checked both diffs, and the trans, along with all my axles and didn't see any circlips that go on there. On the Evergreen computer we saw circlips wtf mate?

Here's the install guide for rear axles, no notes about circlips on the assembly.

Now granted my service book is a "2002 Subaru Impreza Factory Service Manual" and I'm dealing with 02 NA parts and 04 FXT parts....

I'll probably have to load up an FXT axle and the diff and bring it to Evergreen to get stuff explained to my stoopid head.

the n/a driveshaft will be fine, as long as the rear diff flange is the same. the circlip is in the diff not on the axle.
