Bear Notch Road, just past Conway, NH, is free & clear for end of season runs.

I ran it, very, very fast, in the STi with an Audi A8 and my buddy in my old RX8.

Perfect road, no cops, and great weather = Two Great Runs!

Adam and I have been talking about another group drive sometime this month.....

Bear Notch road is, IMO, the nicest "rally" road I've been on in years.

The road (pass) is closed for the winter, & the tar is in MINT condition.

There's only two sweeps on the road that require much braking, & traffic, now that the leaves are past, is non-existent.

I ran it in 50f weather yesterday in triple-digits, safely, twice.

Much colder and my (evenly) worn-into-the-bars Falken 615s are gonna skip, skip CHUNK me into the trees.

I shot goPro video, it's a big file, I'll try and YouTube it later today so's you can check it out.

I'd LOVE to run this road when the tar's +90F, the perfect grade is inspiring.

A Downside: The LONG (guard rail-less!) drop in to the forest below.

A Big, Fat Thought:

This is a Time Attack course to be reckoned with, IF one could get the local town hall to play ball, WE could have one hell of a weekend event...Closing the road is no inconvenience, from what I see on the map.

I could see "The 2010 Mainely Subarus/Patriot Subaru/RockStar New England Time Attack Series" in the cards...

Addendum:

The Notch Road is 10 miles long (approx, I didn't clock it!)

If (during a "normal" hours run) spotters were set up at both ends of the pass, with walkies, then no minivans (or, ahem, po-leece!) could get on the road without us being alerted.

One way through... No other access... = FTW/+1,000,000.

I live in Sebago, it's about 75 minutes from the Naples Causeway, thru Conway on 302, bang a left & you're there.

PM me, & as long as the weather is SAFE, I'll go run this with any of you guys, any time, with a day or two's notice.

(I'll even "chase" and shoot video if your run, for analysis, if ya like!)

As an added Bonus: Sunoco 93 Octane Super is conveniently available on the way.

I would love to be spanked by you guys and your turbo-charged boxers, but I'm not able to do it this weekend....maybe next?

As a "group drive" w more than 3 cars at a time, I don't know...

This isn't so much "scenic" as it is balls-out Time Attack.

The A8 was there just to run it with an STi, or the like.

It was only my 3rd all-time run when I rolled w the A8, he was a "local", & I trailed him to check his braking points. Great run

This would have to go off in groups of 1-3 to be safe and fun.

IMO more than three leaving at the same time would put most drivers at the mercy of those ahead of them, even if well-grouped.

Nate, my snows WERE going on today.

IF people want to run this for the last (sane!) time this season, I'll wait till' Monday.

Hell, i'd run it with my VR Blizzaks, just not too hard.

The road is closing very soon, anyhow.

Yeah, I didn't realize this until more posts were added. If this is a push-it-to-the-limit type thing, I am still interested though. Maybe the group ride would be just getting there for some folks who do not want to participate in the high-revving shenanigans...

Sunday is supposed to be 52F and sunny in Conway.

Let's do it!!

Here's my Initial Plan:

Meet up @ the Naples Causeway (by the Long Lake paddleboat!) at 10:30 am, & we'll head out at 11:00 am.

Bring nothing, plenty of food in Conway, etc.

I'll bring walkies and the video camera-I can also loan it to record y'alls runs, first-hand-bring your own SD mem card, 2 Gigs+, if interested.

Sign up here, please.

NOBODY said a WORD about "street racing" blah blah blah...

If offended by this UNSANCTIONED event, please feel free to ignore it.

Ahhh Bear Notch! Been on it a number of times now, and it's just as fun each time

I'd love to get back down there sometime before the end of the year or once the snow comes.

couple questions here...

are you SURE that the radios work all along the route? you might have ppl "posted" at each end of the road but if somebody bulls their way thru can you be 100% sure that cars already on the route can receive the warning. what about ATV trail crossings, hiking trails, etc?? difficulties in radio comms is a constant headache for rally organizers, complicated by mountainous terrain, trees line-of-sight issues, etc

what is your plan if a car goes off?? that road is very unforgiving (lots of crests, bad sight lines, large upright objects everywhere to hit) , and you have untrained drivers flirting with the edge of control....and the more ppl come to play, the more likely an incident is to happen. "Holy personal responsibility, Batman."

you DO realize that some of the houses at either end of the road have had more than their fill of similar 'events' and have proven themselves quite happy to call the staties if a bunch of cars with fat tires and loud exhausts show up?

sounds like it might be fun but unfortunately I'm kinda busy whenever your date is...

One end of the road is house-less, & the other end has +2 miles of wind-down before houses.

I'm not advocating excessive speed, not enough people, including myself, know it well enough-I'm just suggesting a fun drive, is all.

On com-links: If not walkies, then cels-there's always a solution.

As to loud exhausts, if nobody hammers it in a residential area, then it shouldn't be an issue.

There are no access points, including ATV trails, that I saw, & we can always check again.

Safety first, always.

This isn't a race, it's a drive, and it's no big deal, just fun.

Sounds like what you need is some people with Ham Radios on the walkie talkie frequency. That should not be hard to do, as long as you can find people with Mobile Ham Radios that operate on CB frequencies too. This gets you through the FCC 4 Watt limit on CB radios, if they are designed to be Ham as well but you operate on CB freq, then you don't need a ham licence and you can transmit at 100watts plus. Also, you can add a linear amplifier but I don't think that is legal unless you HAVE a Ham licence. That being said, I am pretty sure Walkie Talkies transmit on the lower 20 or so CB bands. Its the way they are made.

This thread makes me very very very jealous. I would love to go there and drive it myself, but I don't trust myself well enough to stay at lower speeds. I would also love to ride along with someone, but I don't trust them to not fly off into the woods.

If people can ever get the city gov't to close the road or manage traffic, I would definitely try and get down there though.
