Exhaust Laws: Anyone ever been pulled over?

Mine was acting up this morning at a stoplight, revved it which cures the temporary rough idle... Well I was a mile from my house and mirrors fogged all up so didn't see the windham cop just Pullig up next to me... Mines loud, can hear it before you see it. And he didn't do a thing... Just stared at me... I guess windham can be cool about exhaust, for future reference...

its all in how you drive, if you have a loud exhaust and are passing cops, push in the clutch or upshift so that you're rolling lower rpms and thus its quieter.

learn how to drive your loud exhaust quietly.

then enjoy it.

I've been looking and reading some of the posts and this is what I have to say.

I know some of you have heard my car. It's loud as hell. It's basically a 3in straight pipe from the turbo back. Catless dp, and Invidia N1 Race catback. Thing is ridiculous on my STi.

Here's the thing guys and gals. You get the exhaust, you need to be ready to deal with any consequences. I haven't really had any issues with my setup in the past 3 years I have had it on my current car and my previous(09 wrx). It's about how you drive and not being obnoxious with it.

I've been talked to twice. First time was in augusta by a state trooper. i was trading wheels with another guy in brunswick and put tires on that would fit his car. Going 65, the car was revving at about 3500-4000 rpm so it was a little loud going by him. Only got a warning. Second time, i was in line to park at fright night at the fort at fort knox and a sheriff was directing traffic. He just asked me if it was an aftermarket exhaust and i said yes.

if you're being respectful, and not racing around town, you will most likely be fine.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I will definitely be going with something resonated, so not the Invidia 'Race' N1. Really leaning toward the CNT Quad tip for the STi, actually. It won't net any power or weight savings over the stock, but it looks awesome and is probably a good compromise on noise over the N1.

I'm also considering a carbon fiber driveshaft to ditch the laughable two-piece hunk-o-junk that these cars come with, so it's probably best to wait and do both at the same time next summer.

January: Stage I tune, after I switch to Rotella T6.

July: AEM CAI, Grimmspeed EBCS, CNT catted TBE, and DSS carbon fiber driveshaft.

Eventually: 245 Pilot Super Sports and 18x8.5 Rota Gravels when the dunlops are toast.

I got pulled over for speeding and the cop said my exhaust(Borla Hush) sounded "nice", but that was before I installed a catless DP and UP. Its not very "Hush" anymore. I actually plan on doing a striaght piped axle back and keeping the resonator in the mid pipe.

Ben, you know now how loud a invidia n1 race sounds like in person lol, its loud as hell haha....If you drive normal around town, most of the time the cops wont bother you

Haha, yeah, even with the snow it was pretty damn loud. Sounded so nasty though when you ripped out of there. It must be a slight difference in header design (or maybe just a placebo), but the older WRX/STI's sound different than the 08+

I'll probably end up going CNT quad tip, or if I really cheap out, a CNT or Tsudo N1. They're all going to rust here in Maine, so whatever. And as for loudness, any exhaust will be competing with the symphony of gear whine and gearbox rumble from all of my bushings & mounts.

I do have a ported stock manifold with a grimmspeed crosspipe, perrin catless up pipe.....cnt quad is nice, i like the sound of it

A cop just showed up in my driveway with his panties all in a bunch Bc I got into it pretty good up my road after I worked on the motor until 1 am last night... Test drive this morning, 55 mph is all I hit and cop showed up Bc someone complained I was speeding a ton.. Loud Exhaust plus red car is apparently decieving hahaha

Does anybody know how loud the invidia q300 vs the greddy evo exhaust for the legacy.

+1. just remember any of those exhausts is going to sound way different on your car, rather than a turbo.

So, out of sheer boredom and curiosity, I took my entire muffler off tonight and went for a drive...

Idling or just driving normally, it sounded worlds better than stock, but was surprisingly tame. I found that I could be quite with it if I wanted to be. It's more of a hollow, raspy growl than the poppy rumble of an N1.

Going WOT for the first time with it though: holy hell... just, glorious boxer rumble. I will never forget that, and will definitely be getting an exhaust, no question.

I'm sure it was waaay too loud outside, but inside, I was fine with the volume. Unless the N1 exhausts are significantly louder than this, inside volume is definitely not a problem for me. I might try an N1 afterall and just be mindful and respectful with the noise.

Thanks for the link. That sure would sound nice, but I don't have the money to spend just yet.

A friend of mine owns a 2012 WRX hatch as well, and recently picked up a used CNT Quad Tip for $150,(in the seller's photo, they had literally assembled it on the floor in the wrong order...) My friend is hell-bent on getting a Q300 though, so he's going to use this CNT until May and he'll likely then sell it to me for like a $100. If it doesn't sound the way I want, I'll clean it up really nice and resell it.
