How do I fight my exhaust ticket?

So I get pulled over all the time for the dumbest things everyone else gets away with just because I drive an STI so the latest thing is my exhaust which he pulled me over, being a total dick and gave me a ticket for excessive exhaust noise section 19913 any tips or info on how I can fight this?

Acctually I just found this...

3. Amplification prohibited. A person may not operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system that has been modified to amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle.[1993, c. 683, Pt. A,

 
that silly obscure law gives the po-po basically free rein to throw papers at you for whatever they judge as "excessive amplification." They let ear-splitting Harleys go, and bust STIs. Their word against yours. Fact of life. Sucks, but that's how it is.

You better hope you had stock STI pipes on, or if you don't get it switched asap!

6. Exception. Subsections 1 and 3 do not apply to a muffler or exhaust system that does not emit noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J-1169 adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. A person served with a Violation Summons and Complaint charging a violation of subsection 1 or 3 must provide satisfactory evidence that the muffler or exhaust system does not emit a noise in excess of 95 decibels as measured in accordance with standards and specifications outlined in standard J-1169 adopted by the Society of Automotive Engineers in May 1998. Measurements must be made by participating certified inspection stations.

 
Was the cop being nice and just wrote you up for excessive exhaust noise rather than speeding? Just curious if he was letting you off with a lesser charge.

 
I just went through this...

If you contest it, all you have to do is bring a dB test, done by an appropriate shop in with you.

I went through all this with a prick cop recently who was dead set on thinking the law said it couldn't be any louder than factory...

So when I told him he was wrong and contested it, and he showed up, and he admitted 3 times during the court date that he wasn't even aware of that (thus pulling me over for no reason, when he passed me on the road, I was at idle revs... it wasn't loud, just saw a shiny black car with a big wing and a kid in the seat.) the law existed, they still charged me because I didn't bring proof.

I believe it was Pedro who told me where I should have gone (and foolishly didn't) to get my dB test done. ??? ???

I love that we live in a world where they can screw you even when they don't know the law themselves. I'm not going to become a surgeon if I don't know the difference between someone's kidney or blatter? :

Cy's Foreign Auto in Lewiston has a noise meter and I believe he is certified for government testing. He's just north of Mardens in Lewiston where there is a whole pile of VW.

 
Holy cow you guys are fast!! Alright so this is what ive come up with I need to 1 get a silencer and pass that 95db test or 2 swap exhausts to something quieter either permanently or temp just to pass cause I dont have the stocker anymore. By the way im running a twister mkIII which is pretty loud. The cop had no reason to pull me over it doesn't help I have bright blue 10k bulbs(which im gona swap back to 8's) but I saw him and barely gave it any gas at all I kept it around 1500rpms so there is no way it could have been over 95db of course he told me you couldn't change the exhaust at all nothing about the 95db thing. O and I was doing absolutly nothing wrong I was taking off as slow as possible from a light and he was oppisite to me in the intersection.

 
The exhaust law was changed fairly recently, so there's a good chance he missed the memo. Up until about a year ago you couldn't deviate from stock.

Or he was bored

 
So im gona try to silence this thing and go and get it tested anyone know of a place in the portland area?

Yeah, they did mine when I had my old exhaust on with the muffler I had .... it was over 95 with the silencer in ;D :

when the cop first saw you and then came around to stop you....did he have his car window open, otherwise how could he have heard you....unless you were wicked loud n guilty anyway? >

remember, the mere fact of being seen driving an STI puts you on the policeman's "natural enemy" list . He was probly sharp enough to recognize the aftermarket exhaust, and after you he went.

How loud is 95db anyways im kinda curious and what excatly do they do during this noise test thing do they rev it to a certain amount or something?

 
Go to Cy's Foriegn Auto in Lewiston or Rennen Performance in Brunswick and get it tested. $25 pass or Fail.

Portland area, I don't know, but you could call Chris at Portland Tint. He'll know where to get it tested in town if there is a Portland place.

They have a list they check to see what to rev it to and they set up this microphone looking thing on a tripod and measure a certain distance away from the exhaust. It has a gauge on it to show the dBs ... that's what they did when mine was tested anyway.
