How do I fight my exhaust ticket?

well, maybe somebody's doing something right! ;D

the sound check goes something like this: mircophone is set on a stand a certain distance and angle from the exhaust tip. car is run up to a certain rpm and back down a couple times, and the meter tells the tale.

how loud is 95dB? actually not that loud, probly not much louder than stock STI exhaust...which you can bet is engineered to pass.

Rally cars currently have to pass a 105 dB test, which I can tell you is effin loud! Heh, our LDR STI barely passes, and my 2.5RS with straight pipes hits 107 or 110 (and I don't mean mph). Several spectators have told me, "Jeez Dave, your car was the LOUDEST of the whole rally!" 8)

urlosn--why not have your current pipe tested before you tear it off and spend lots of $$$ for a new one? Heh, it just might pass...wouldn't that fry the officer's butt! Of course then he'd be after you for spitting on the sidewalk or swallowing your chewing gum.

Talked to chris he was nice but didnt really know of any shops in portland and so I called ray at cy's and waiting for him tio call back I was trying to find out what rpm the load them at to do the test because a guy from bpm is gona tell me what it is with and without a silencer I belive. Alson does anyone know how I can make this thing quieter( make a silencer, steel wool, etc......)?

On a side note he got me on my 10k bulbs which are supposed to be 100% dot approved street legal blah blah blah what does that even mean? They are fairly blue but but supposedly legal does dot mean your all set or does state laws override that i mean my lights are no different then like saab or whats on a maxima those are both very blue as well.

only way to tell if bulbs are legal is to verify "DOT" stamped on bulb base. pull a bulb...if it says DOT on the base you are ok (take it to court) if not, you are screwed. this is not rocket science.

bulbs that are not DOT usually have a little disclaimer on packaging somewhere (in tiny type, natch) "for show use only" if this is what you had in the car, you are hosed.

if bulb base says DOT, at least you have something to fight about in court. the quest may still come down to "police said vs owner said." problem is, there's no way to prove what was actually in the car at time of traffic stop.

you guys need to know this stuff about modding your cars, the cops can (and will) take full advantage of ppl who set themselves up for a ticketing.

Legal bulbs have to be 55W low, 65W high beams. If it's more than that, yer screwed. I'm not sure what the law on the color is, but that's the law on wattage.

So does anyone know if DOT approval justifies color or is it just wattage?
what he tried to get you on was the fact that it is illegal to add hid's to a car that didnt come with them... actually 10k bulbs are less visible light then 4700k that the stock ones are therefore not as bright.

as for the exhaust it used to happen to me all the time... (when my car was stock, a silencer wont help... lose the wing and the URLOSN licence plate, as well as the white stripes)

sounds like your cop was a calk smoker and you pissed him off somehow... maybe because you have a fast loud bright shinny car.

This is why I got a g35 ( I haven't even been stoped for speeding once, when in the sti I was stoped for looking fast).

thank you pat for solving the mystery

know I know what car we're talking about....might as well have a 3-foot reflective "Fark Yew, Coppers" decal on the back and a big fat bullseye on the driver's door!

this whole thread is not actually about anything technical, it's about natural adversaries....cops in cop cars and non-cops in loud, striped STIs with wicked blue headlights. THERE is your problem.

Yea i get the point about my car being a cop magnet I guess the the bulbs will have to go and ill probally change the plate to something less noticable. I really dont know what to do about the exhaust theres no way its gona pass the sound test from I hear from bpm so now I need to find a quieter setup.

Do you think if I just pay the ticket and continue to drive it with the same exhaust very carefully ill be alright?

trainable has my stock sti exhaust in freeport if you think you might want to bolt it on to pass. he might be using the catback tho. Which reminds me Im gonna need and inspection sticker in wisconsin soon and they sniff their cars. Lifes a grandma.

That would be awesome im thinking if I can just bolt up the cat back on and use that to pass te sound test but I dont know if it will fit the rest?
