How do I fight my exhaust ticket?

Can I just shove a bunch of like steel wool or something in there?
Tried that with mine, doesn't work as well as you would think.... not without taking the muffler off and like straight up filling it...

rennen performance in brunswick will do the test. they're right on pleasant street off the first exit.

basically this is the laymens version of the law:

if your car came with an exhaust over 95db from the factory (srt-4 etc) than you can have a modified exhaust that is up to the sound limit of the stock exhaust.

if your car came with something 95db or under from the factory you can have a modified exhaust that is up to 96db, but it has to be certified.

the SAE J1169 certification test is:

the engine is revved to 3/4 max hp, or about 4500rpm in most of our cases. using a calibrated dB meter, test the exhaust from 20in away at a 45deg angle. recording starts at 4500, not on the upswing in rpm. all other walls/cars/large objects that could reflect sound must be at least 3 yards away, and it should be in a relatively quite area.

rennen is not in a quite area during the day. if you want it done there you need to talk with jake and see if some arrangement can be made.

last i knew 'certified' just ment a receipt saying that you paid for and passed the test, there is no actual certificate.

the law was enacted in 2003 for maine, theres no reason cops shouldnt know about it. that didnt stop the cop that pulled me over a couple weeks ago from trying to convince me that there were no places in the state that certify. after convincing him overwise he let me go. :

Some of the laws were pushed for clearification by Archie's Offroad. He may know of more testing places also.

I don't know why everyone is pissed at the cop and surprised it happened. If it won't pass a sound test, it's friggen loud. 95 decibels is loud. It isn't the cops law, it's the state's law. Be pissed at the guys who passed the law, not the guys who have to enforce it. Yeah it sucks, but he was just doing his job.

But I'd swap my exhaust to stock and get a sound check. Then tell the cop and DA you changed it now that you know better. Apologize and say you didn't realize just how loud it was. I bet they drop it.

The route I decided im gona take is swap the stock back and get the sound check done then swap back to my exhaust. That way when if I get pulled over again ill have something to show(even though its a different exhaust) and then im gona contest the ticket and show them the sound check slip saying my exhaust met specs and that I changed my bulbs as well and show them they were 100% DOT. I did play around last night and shoved things down the muffler and it is possible to make it much much quieter so I may try something like that as its gona be the easiest way to deal with this mess.

losn, if you think you are gonna waltz into court and make the cop look bad, that is your biggest mistake of several you've made so far. So maybe you DO get away with switching exhausts for a test and then switch back to your loud one....just remember that same officer is now gonna be watchng you like a hawk. By then in his eyes, you will have proven yourself to be a lying troublemaker and policmen particularly do NOT like guys like that. Esp if that same guy has made him look bad in front of a judge. Police have long memories and have their ways of getting revenge. Good luck with that, you'll need it.

Shorty's advice is the best so far. Put on the stock pipes, pass a sound test, go to court with the paperwork and be contrite. Aplogize. It won't kill you. Chances are very good they will let you off. Go to court and try to pull a fast one and they WILL bust your ass. Judges and police are not as stupid as ppl like to think. The DA has seen every trick in the book, and it's his job to watch for ppl trying to pull sh*t on the court. That is a formidable team. Be very aware that they are NOT to be messed with.

true the best thing is to get the exhaust tested as is... then if too loud get your stocker and then go to court.

You are completely misunderstanding me. I dont want to make the cop look bad I dont care what he looks like for that matter I just want to go about my daily business in peace. Im only going to have the stock exhaust long enough for me to pass the sound test why would it really matter if I have it on when I go to court or not? Im still going to be humble and appologize or whatever needs to be said just like the cops im not stupid either. This whole thing is going on the fact that the particular cop who pulled me over knew nothing about his own laws and pulled me over purely because I have an aftermarket exhaust nothing to do with sound because he would have barely been able to tell as like I said I barely coasted past him and he kept arguing that you cant change your exhaust Period.

thanks for explaining

still worth testing your curent system, if it passes you will be golden.

if not, do the pipe switcheroo and getcher papers.

and make sure to check your current bulbs for the DOT numbers

k I rarely go outside of the For Sale, or Motorsports forums, but this is why I don't do it often... in my 5 minutes of outside of those forums, I've read 2 "Those LOVING cops are assholes" Here is my take on it. Most likely, you were doing something dumb, or have done something dumb for you to be targetted. Speaking from experinces, They do keep tabs on cars. If they keep seeing the same STI that drives tached out in 2nd gear through Downtown, that gets annoying. if you dont want to get pulled over for loud exhaust, then shift to another gear.. say 3rd. Its amazing how much difference that makes. Also you dont always have to Floor the gas at every light. I don't know your car.. But if it doesn't have a stock Muffler, Don't cry about getting tickets about it. Or just move to the sticks where they dont care..

your exhaust is 1/2 as loud as mine... you were just being targeted. I haven't been stopped in my integra yet for the exhaust and I dont know why. Guess my luck has changed since the sti... as i said I used to get pulled over with my sti when it was stock for the exhaust so just learn to deal with it... some cops are bad some are good just dont f around too much and you will be ok. you are lucky he didnt rip your inspection off the car.

I got stopped in cape once because i had a plate light out(which wasnt out it was working fine) so i made the cop stand there in the rain with his flashlight and help me figure out the wiring issue (which was no existant)... needless to say he got pissed and left and told me to slow down... I was doing 20 in a 30 because i was trying to find someones house some cops just do that to ya... loose the wing and 85% of it will go away.
