wife and i got into an arguement today over the idea of getting into the passing lane to let those who are entering the highway have room.

my opinion is dont do it.

the on ramp has a yeild sign for a reason. its my lane and you are entering it. im not hte asshole here.

even if the highway clear and im the only one around, why the hell should i yeild to them and get out of their way.

some dude got all mad and angry when i didnt let him in, he flips me off, yelling curse word in the car with his kids around. (great example i guess). i wave at him and smile.

wife will hit the brake and slow down to make room for those entering the highway.

discuss.

I move over if there is a cluster Fk comming down the onramp. and because if they are slow and get in front of me I don't want to be in that lane.

and you were being a dick

I will pull into left lane IF there is little traffic and I can do so safely, just as a courtesy. However, I WILL NOT slow, or pull over if it means making other traffic slow for the person that is supposed to yield. It quite ticks me off when someone thinks that it is OK to inconvenience others for their own convenience, i.e. pulling in front of me, forcing me to slow down so they can go 1/4 mile up the road to the 7-11, ten seconds sooner than if they had waited for me to pass.

I tend to give way to ppl entering highway, mainly as a defensive measure. who cares who has "right of way" if the person coming onto hwy is yakking on the phone, watching DVD, not paying attention, or simply has never heard of the concept of "rear view mirror??!!"

Esp with the big rig (haul truck and loaded car trailer), the actual rules mean nothing...if they get in your way, it's your fault for hitting them if you haven't covered your own backside. most ppl have no diea that the heavy rig can't brake if they doddle into fast traffic. they just go by the unofficial Mass state motto: "when in doubt, pull out." :

only way I wouldn't give way is if I had to punt somebody already in passing lane to make the move.

DG

PS -- those who have road-tripped with me know there is a new swear-word to describe these annoying creatures who can't seem to merge gracefully...F((*^%$$##!! MERGERS!!

its not so much as right of way as it is the fact that the EXPECT me to move over for them and get all pissy when i dont.

I agree with Rez, except for the empty highway part.

There seems to be a nationwide epidemic of people who are unable to merge.

Can we lump in the folks who STOP in the EZ-pass lane?

The way I look at it is...

I got into a collision because a similar jack-ass to RezPunk's jackass decided to gun it ahead of me from the yield sign. Be safe, get out of their way, because you never know what jackass is coming onto the highway.

After all, Maine is full of Masshole drivers now...
