snow driving fun tips

isn't that class like $400...
Yes. About what you have wrapped up in Thule rackage to carry your toys. BAck when I got started in high-performance driving, the $ I spent at TEam O'Neil on training was THE most cost-effective spending in the whole process.

Just since this most recent snowstorm, at least one board member here has already wrecked their Leggy GT while finding out that they don't really have any clue about how to slide around in the snow. Bet he'd gladly take that back and spend $400 on a driving course instead. And I've already heard about several 'moments' from other members who almost did same thing last nite....

!!! Every year I keep promising to commit myself to going to Dalton NH, I drove up there a couple years ago to get more info and learned they were closed that day! Idiot!

I'd go up with ya Rick. You thinking about doing that this year?

Maybe in Feb/March, not sure if I'm willing to commit the monies to that right now, poor timing. I thought Garrett wanted to go up there too, maybe he can chime in.

Yeah I don't know if I can commit at this point either. Holidays are coming though, so maybe some money from that can be set aside for this.

I wasn't trying to troll this thread by stating the price, I just wanted to throw it out there because it is somewhat pricey, I had looked into it last year. On a side note, I got my roof rack set-up for free

OK guys, just to show that the Team O'Neil crew is serious about winter driving...how about this.

Mainely Subarus members get to do the Team O'Neil Winter Safe course for $295. Call up the school, check out the schedule, ask for Nancy, tell her you're a MS member and that Dave G sent ya.

Bring snow tires, it gets kind of old pulling Scoobies out of the snowbank cuz they're trying to run "all-ski-sons."

oh man i rly want to take this you can NEVER know enough ive taken 2 other driving classes and you always learn something new i watched 6 kids drive off the road last night trying to be Ken Block messing around on the open road is never smart if you want to play like that go find a empty parking lot.

Going to a rallyx is also a good way to hoon around in your car with purpose. Guys like Nate and Rob will usually give you tips and hints how to be a better drives.

It's fun, as the day goes on, you can see your times getting faster and you get better at it.

that's an amazing offer! as soon as I can get the money together (aka get a job) I will make a point to get down there!

Very nice, thanks!

that class was a ton of fun, i did it two years ago in the legacy... Dave and the other instructors really help you understand how to become a better driver. they even put up with my habit of wanting to be sideways pretty much all the time haha

id def love to do it again!

I plan on doing the class as soon as I can, possibly even the other classes they offer.

Especially once I buy a newer car as it will be the first AWD car I own, FWD is interesting in the snow but I feel as though the subaru chassis and design puts the handling ahead of many FWD cars built in the 90's. Be interesting to do the class in my current car. I've made it 4 years without the class and just some good studded snows, just have to be smart about it.

Drivetrain (AWD, FWD, RWD,) and tires control how fast you can get going.

Suspension (small amount) and tires control whether you can turn

but

only TIRES control whether you can stop. This is the MOST important physical thing. The most important mental thing is slowing down. Period.

Nobody has ever gone off the road because they were going too slow. The root cause of 99.9% of snow accidents is speed. Slow down, and almost every single accident can be avoided.

That's a great price! Wanna do it soon! Is it best to come after a storm?
Most 1-day Winter Safe classes are on weekends, generally 2 courses a month in Jan, Feb and March. Check out the school calendar online and pick your day. Not quite like skiing where you can go, "aaah hasn't snowed on a week so I guess I'm going ice fishin instead on Saturday." Actually, big snowfall on the course weekend isn't ideal since it really complicates road travel to get there.

No need to worry much about course conditions though--the school grooms its roads like crazy. They have 2 plows, a powdermaker, snow/gravel rakes and even a snowmaker rented from a local ski area if all else fails. School also has a big tractor-mounted snowblower, we often drive the blower thru the snowbanks and blast snow back onto the course if need be. Even if there's a foot of freshies, you'll be running on a hard-packed base.

Grooming ensures consistent conditions and minimizes chances of hurting the cars.
