The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

so did you pull the trigger yet?? I picked up a chain tensioner so I can complete my singlespeed carbon Merckx AXM. Not that I expect to ride it anytime soon...

Not yet.

I just got boned for $440 by a local guy selling "seasoned" firewood. I am 90% sure that the tree was standing within the last 3mo. It is that green. and now the dude won't return my calls.
Buy Local. Buy Maine.

Is it a business or just a dude who happens to have lots of wood?

Ok I should recind that post. It is a local logging company. The delivery guy pulled from the green pile instead of the seasoned pile. It is being made right. so I am cool with it.

so I should be getting this bike soonish.

well maybe I can get this pile shipped to me before then. or should I ride my SS MTB? do I need a basket? haha

I'll most likely be riding a single speed, with a backpack or messenger bag. Mid point beer sounds good to me. There's a CVS over on Forest Ave we could stop and get something and then hit the Great Lost Bear. Just a thought...

I'll probably do the same, bag wise. My choices are road bike or 5" travel bike, unless I can get a singlespeed built in time...

You should make the ole Dean into a single speed. Easily done if you have an extra set of brake levers. You'll need a chain tensioner which you can get off of PricePoint or Nashbar, etc for around $20. Actually, I believe Nashbar has a whole kit which includes the spacers for the freehub and 3 different cogs. EASY.

That nashbar one is what is on my MTB. You need way more chain tension than you would think, but it works.

i've been using the Nashbar one on a beater bike that hauls the kid trailer & has the rack for the kid seat for years. Works well. I just bought a new one from PricePoint (exact same tensioner as Nashber) for the Merckx but the sucker is damn noisy. Not sure why. I may flip flop the old Nashbar one onto the Merckx. I want to ride the carbon beast for the cranksgiving...

Ya- need a new crankset too. And I might build up the kona, sell the dean....meh
keep the Dean!!! For the crankset, you can pickup a Truvativ Stylo 3.3 for $114 online which includes the GXP bottom bracket. Then to make it a single speed, just remove the big and small rings. You'll need shorter chainring bolts too. Still cheaper than buying the Stylo 1.1 single speed crankset.
