But I'm not sure buying the first year of a brand new car will be a smart idea. Even if the badge says Subaru.

I read an article about a month ago that the subaru vesion was getting the name BRZ (Boxer Rear-wheel Z). and that the new engine is a departure from the EJ seiries except in one important way. they share the same bolt pattern. so any EJ engine will fit in the new BRZ car.

 
I'd guess the new engine they were talking about is the FB series. No reason not to use it, it's going to be a pretty nice little motor.

The toyota/scion version has been re-engineered by Yamaha. so it is basically just the same by shape and overall design. the parts should differ slightly.

 
Yamaha did acoustic design for the LFA, this was more along the likes of the Gen1 SHO type of manufacturing assist.
