The unofficial GUN talk thread

I'm unlikely to go if its pouring out. However, I'd really like to check out jamey's Taurus 709. I'm shopping for something skinny.

Well I'm a huge Glock guy, but I couldn't pass up a deal. I took my girlfriend to my favorite local gun shop to try out some guns for off duty carry. She is issued a SIG 229 for a duty weapon (police officer), but her small frame doesn't really support her carrying it all that comfortably under a blazer or sweatshirt during frequent details that she does. She was looking for something smaller, comfortable for her to shoot (small hands), and slightly more concealable when open/partially concealed carrying on details.

Now I immediately tried to stick Glocks in her hand. She shoots all of mine, and shoots them well, but the thickness of the grip from back strap to front strap isn't the most comfortable for her. After sticking a dozen guns in her hand I picked up and XD compact and stuck it in her hand. She fell in LOVE. The size of the grip fits her well, and the size of the gun fit her carry needs while still holding a decent amount of ammo (13+1 or 16+1). Funny thing is with normal hands you only get 2 fingers on the grip. With hers she can fit all three under the trigger guard. Haha. Picked it up used, but I couldn't tell. 5 mags included.

I love my Taurus. But the 7+1 capacity sucks I may look into xd in the future

Looks like that has 13 safeties on it. Is that enough?

Sounds like her hands a lot like mine. Only double stacks that fit me are M&P, SR9/40, XD, taurus 24/7, and CZs. I like most all single stacks.

Glad she found something that's gonna work well for her.

I picked up a XD back in 03 when they were brand new. I LOVE mine. I have a 4'' service model in 357 Sig with a 40S&W replacement barrel for competition and plinking. Glad she is enjoying it. I generally find a lot of guns (such as some Glocks) don't fit my hand either.

Looks like that has 13 safeties on it. Is that enough?

HAR HAR! They only have 3 and all are passive. You just need to have your hand firmly in place and squeeze the trigger. That's it. It just can not go off without you doing both of those and you can't rack the slide without having your hand in place. A little bit of reassurance while carrying that you can't shoot yourself and all the movies where a gun gets thrown and goes off when it hits the floor... that definitely can not happen with an XD, even if the cocked indicator button was hit.

Welp, I went to lay down some cabbage on a Kahr CW9 I found at G3 for cheap. It was sold. Then I got bit by the 1911 bug again. My intention (this time) was to get something for ccw..like pocket size. I liked the Kahr trigger best of all the DAO skinny guns I tried. However, they had a compact 1911, which really isn't all that compact, but its a 1911, which is what I've always wanted. I just dont know if I'll be happy with a short 1911, and if I get a full size I can compete with it. Well, I can compete with the short one but my suckiness will be amplified. Not sure I can live with a 1911 crammed in my britches but I know people do it with full sizers. This will be the last one my wife lets me get until the youngens are half way thru college.

Gimme your thoughts.

Don't get a compact 1911. For concealed carry the Kahr would fit the bill much better. And for competition, the full size would be better.

I think trying to get a gun that will do both, will actually land you with a gun that won't do either very well.

PS... Northeastern has a nice used Kahr CM9 for sale. $375. It's what I carry daily. Awesome shooter, at an awesome price.
