what makes the OBS so special?

Its basically a truck that doesn't tip around corners, and the reason why I love subies. It takes forever to build up speed but playing in mud is better than praying not to get pulled over.

i don't know if it's worth that much, but maybe close. the outback sport is just a step above the regular impreza (same chassis, better stuff). i think they sit a touch taller and have more options and 2-tone paint. other than that it's an impreza l

taiden, good OBS's are in the $3000-4000 range

mileage is less important than body condition, that boston craigslist one looks to have cancerous rear wheel arches. probly worth emailing seller, ask for closeup pics of "few rust areas need attention." I wonder if this is craigspeak for "few body parts ready to fall off"

the OBS is on an Impreza chassis (same wheelbase and loverall length) , the reg Outback is based on Legacy, a much larger and heavier body. OBS has slightly raised suspension compared to reg Impreza, this is one reason they are so good on bad roads.

well i've seen impreza outbacks that dont look like the legacy outbacks... are those all OBS's?

edit: I should restate that... I've seen Impreza Outbacks that are not OBS and they don't look like the legacy outbacks. Those should also be based on the impreza chassis, i can't see how it wouldn't.... so my question still stands. It doesn't seem like much difference between the OBS and the L since they appear to be the same chassis.

An Impreza Outback is an OBS. A Legacy Outback is the big wagon. We already answered whats different between the Impreza L and the Impreza OBS on the first page.

Go with the OBS, it seems they just work better.

I hear what you're saying and maybe I misunderstand, but there are Impreza Outback L, it's the base model Impreza Wagon. I'm trying to compare that to the Outback Sport. So far it seems like the hood, interior, springs, two tone paint and rubber on the roof are the only differences.

The Legacy Outback is a whole different car and I don't really care about it (although I like the way they look).

nategr8ns: Yeah, it's a little much. I talked to him and I strongly believe I can get it for $1600 for reasons I don't care to elaborate on. No sexual favors though, you dirty man.

Would that be considered a good price assuming the rust isn't out of hand?

There's the Impreza body:

Impreza L

Impreza Brighton (some years)

Impreza 2.5RS

and Impreza Outback Sport (AKA OBS, Impreza Outback, and Outback sport:

Then there's the Legacy body:

Legacy L

Legacy GT

Legacy Outback (usually just known as "Outback")

Interior I think is just different fabric, most stuff seems the same as the regular L to me.

Not really sure on the new price. All I know is that $2k is too high.

theres an impreza wagon L....and a Impreza outback sport..no outback sport L
hahahaha this is such a cluster ****.

OK. So there is an Impreza L wagon, but no Impreza Outback L Wagon. Outback means OBS... but there are Impreza L Wagons....

christ almighty... now I'm straightened out.

I guess what I'm saying is what's the point in getting an Outback Sport Wagon when you can get an L Wagon?

different trim, different suspension, and different interior.

back in 97, that obs was downright badass. it looked like a little battlewagon. so much different from everything else that was out there.

yea. nowadays, it is just like a lot of other cars that are out there, but back then, it was something pretty special.

the outback / obs just have a lot of something a lot of cars now do not have. character.

dont buy it? cool. then they're not for you. but, a lot of people dig them, and subaru sold a ton of them.

cliffnotes?: Outbacks are friggin sweet, dude.

Difference in suspension, color scheme and maybe interior along with some extra factory goodies (accessories) that the Impreza L doesn't have. Those were the differences between on '07 OBS and an '07 Impreza 2.5 wagon when I was shopping for my car a few years ago.

In the years your talking about, there also might be a difference in the differentials and tranny....I'm not too educated in those model-years though.

Wow, I didn't do too bad!

Also, keep an eye out for these on the road in your area. I can tell you know when you start to pay attention, you're going to see a lot. These things last forever and then a little while after that.

I definitely want an OBS. I've been eye **** ing them for the last week when I see them around. I just want to put the idea through the ringer so when it comes out dry I know it's the right choice for me.

But at the same time, if I run across a clean L I want to be able to convince myself that I'm not missing much lol.

Now the only thing in my way is OBD1 vs OBD2.. I want to be able to put an SVX motor in later down the road and OBD2 would make that difficult... considering I was going to run a standalone ecu.

If that's the plan, go with a '95 Wagon (whatever trim you find) to avoid OBD2. Spinmaster is working on getting OBD2 back into his '97 that he swapped with an older 2.2-turbo engine.

There has to be some way to make a dummy OBD2 port, I can't imagine it being that hard.

It seems strange that there is no way around OBD2 code checking for inspection.

it's easy to get around OBDII for inspection...move north. only a few counties in southern ME (or North Boston as Rez sez) require such silliness. Swappage in such counties is def complicated by this requirement.

so what happens if i live in cumberland county and get inspected in aroostook?

that could be a huge pain in the ass
