What other years are compatible with my 98 ?

I like to go to all the local junkyards looking for good deals on parts for cars. what other year cars have a lot of interchangable/compatable parts ? a quick google search turned up nothing.

Pretty much 95-99 Legacy's have mostly the same parts, but Subarus are like Lego's, so you can do a lot of mixing and matching for a lot of parts

MOST 95-99 parts swap, there are some exceptions though.

A lot of the wiring is different, gauge cluster is different, the wiring changed; auto tranny changed in 99, phase 2; some engine differences, change to interference and header change, still swap though; and just a few other things.

But pretty much all mechanical, body, and interior stuff swap over. Just ask if you need a specific.

how about seats ? the interior is downright narsty on this car ? also maybe at some point id like to swap the auto for a 5spd I would assume I would just need the pedals , tranny , ecu , tranny wiring harness , correct ?

Seats swap from 1990 to about 2009. Impreza/Legacy seats are cross compatible.

Auto to manual swap you need

tranny

driveshaft

rear diff

clutch/fw/pp/tob/pilot bearing

pedal assy

tranny crossmember

interior trim

shifter assy

Auto ECU, although slightly different tuning, will work. Just need to wire up NSS and reverse lights.

awesome , how about suspension ?

I found a set of seats from a sedan , will the backs bolt in , or are the wagons different ?

Fronts are the same, pretty sure backs are different.

Suspension swaps between 1st and 2nd gen legacys, also, 02/03 WRX stuff is a direct swap. You can often find good deals on that stuff when people upgrade.

ok thanks , ive been looking all over for suspension options and all I can find besides 1000 dollar coilover setups is regular lowering springs , but none for wagons ?

I never looked for wagon suspension, because I don't have one. But anything that fits an 02/03 wrx wagon will fit your car. and I know there's a lot out there for the wrx. that's what I've been searching when looking for suspension.

I just found a 96 l wagon on cl for 600. if I get it , everything should be interchangeable correct ?

The gauges, some wiring, back doors, driver's door is wired different, etc won't fit. But most things will.

Why won't the back doors fit? I have used older Legacy doors on newer ones before
In 97 they added an extra post towards the bottom of the door. (rears) If you try to put newer doors on older cars, they don't work. They almost close, but don't. It's to increase the rigidity or something in a crash.

I can only assume if you put the doors without the receiver for that post on a newer car, it would interfere. I guess you could unbolt the post....

Front doors are different. 96 doesn't have the lock all button, instead, when you lock the driver's door lock it locks all the doors. I guess you don't need that button on the passenger's side. But the driver's side wouldn't work right. Maybe you could swap the door cards and wiring, and power lock. sounds like more of a hassle than it's worth.

Yeah that post comes right off so no real issue there, and the door cards would swap over as well as wiring, but you're right, you wouldn't be able to just "plug and play" the door harness from one to the car harness on the other.

Yep, 5 spd swap would work. But the motor wouldn't be a direct swap. The 98 should be phase 2 2.2, and the 95 would be a phase 1 2.2. The wiring, and the heads are different. But the block is the same
