What other years are compatible with my 98 ?

Yep, 5 spd swap would work. But the motor wouldn't be a direct swap. The 98 should be phase 2 2.2, and the 95 would be a phase 1 2.2. The wiring, and the heads are different. But the block is the same
damn , would I have to use the complete harness from the 95 ? if so that's way to much work.

 
ok , so there is some different stuff on the 95. but if I could swap the 5spd and all required parts into the 98 , I could use all the 98 transmission parts in the 95 correct ? sorry for all the questions , I cant seem to find what im looking for searching. I can get this car for a pretty good deal so I think it would be worth the time to swap it all over.

Yes the trans will swap over with no issues. You might need to do a small amount of wiring to get the reverse lights and a couple other small things to work, where you're going from auto to manual. It would just be the motor that wouldn't be complete "plug and play"

95 legacy is OBD2, so the engine will be direct swap.

The evap system is slightly different, but it's not hard to modify to work, just route the hoses like they are on the 98.

The only difference is you'll need to use the dual port header on the 95.

But the engine will physically bolt up and plug in and run no issue at all!!

I'm useless with newer and turbo stuff, but old 80's and 90's cars are my domain. haha.

Also, even if you get an OBD1 ej22 you can just swap the intake manifold, which is wicked easy, then it'll work.

got the car last night , runs and drives real good but I blew the lower radiator hose racing up and down my road. car pulls way harder then the 98 with auto.

if anyone at all wants to come over sometime and help swap engines and stuff you can have your pick at some parts in exchange for your help. ill have the engine and auto from the 98 and whatever is left from the 95.

 
I'd do some wrenching in trade of parts

deal , only thing im gunna take from the 95 is the engine and all parts associated with the 5spd , the alloys and front seats possibly. then anything left from that and then from swapping that stuff into the 98 is also fair game.

the 95 has all good glass , good doors , trunk lid , front fenders are ok ,decent back seats , perfect dash , plenty of good parts to be had.

im trying to find some1 to let me borrow an engine hoist with no luck. I do have a nice compressor and some air tools also.

I've never pulled an engine with a hoist, it's always been a come-along. Pulled it twice on my subaru... And pulled friend's engines on various makes.

I dunno what parts I need, all I really want is 5speed stuff. heh. My legacy is in pretty good shape with nothing broken. Besides the windshield. But that's not a fun swap.

oh you never completed your 5spd swap ? damn well the auto in my 98 was a rebuilt with about 110k on it.

haha , well ok. lemme know what you may want , stuff you could sell to possibly buy your 5spd tranny , im sure we will figure something out. thanks chris.

 
You know, I sort of gave you some mis-information... I was thinking about 95 legacys today because I want one. And remembered that the manual doesn't have EGR. Yours is an auto, so it does have EGR. If you swap that engine, you'll have to deal with the CEL. Even the really smart people on USMB can't figure out how to make that swap completely work. It'll run just fine, just throw an EGR CEL.

How I'd get around that is, swap the intake manifold (which would also fix the evap routing), and the weld a pipe from the header to the EGR thingy on the intake. That's how it works on older chevys, and they also have a flexible hose, so if you could steal that from the junk yard it would be awesome.

 
What kind of shape is the front bumper cover in? I might be interested in that.

im fine with a cel , I could always take the bulb out. thanks for the info. tommorro hopefully ill have a chance to go over the car better and check out the underneath , its its not too bad I may just drive the 95. it really does drive down the road solid with no weird noises except the tires rubbing on the struts because some fool put huge tires on this thing. something like 205-75's.
