Winter Group Drive

Covered Bridge roads are a blast, even at the 'sedate' spec'ed speeds. You are quite correct, that would be a most excellent first-time event. dont worry about keeping perfectly on time, you won't be able to anyway. just work at staying on course and somewhat to specified speeds, that'll be a lot more fun. if it rains, the dirt parts will be even more entertaining.

rallyxi and I did Covered Bridge in the LDR rally RS just after I'd bought it, heh ask him about the one-lane dirt part!

Rallyxi (holding on tight over blind crests): "Um...what if we meet somebody coming the other way?"

Nigel: "Aw don't worry -- instead of hitting them, we just go off the road and crash."

Dave, I PMed you for more info....you seem to know what you're talking about;)

...and to get this thread back on track....umm....I'm putting on my winter tires on in a few weeks....

"drive" you say. seeing vids like this just bugs me for some reason. I ask my self why would someone tape this... There is 236947482837 vids of subys turning the wheel to lock and flooring it and oh yay dounuts in the snow for like a hour awesome ... Oh wow that's so cool we should do this over and over.... Zero driving skills.... FAIL!

I wish I knew where to get some (sheet metal)...but I don't:( If you find some, count me in for one!

What is a good thickness...and exactly what kind of sheet metal? Stainless...something....

I have 1/8" Aluminum for mine. Takes a damn good beating i.e. rocks shooting up, bottoming out, etc...

I was actually just looking sheet metal up at Lowes.com. They measure their stuff out by the gauge of the sheet. I'm trying to figure out what that means exactly. Thanks for the info though Garrett. Hopefully we can track something down around here!

Mike if you want we can meet up sometime and you check out my skid for an idea or two.
Thanks man. Where did you get your's? I like Dan's idea of fabricating our own, but I know that I can buy one from Rallyarmor.com and also from primitive racing. I'll take a look at what you have if you are heading to the monthly meet in Augusta next week though!

Dan's skidplate sketch looks like a Primitive knockoff, it's a great size, and easy install. to fasten front of plate, there are captive nuts under the lower rad support, and for rear of plate there are captive nuts under the trans subframe (the one you'd use to jack front of car). use 1" long M10 bolts with large washers, you're all set. may have to chase threads on the captive nuts before install, they tend to get plogged with road grime.

ovalize the holes in the plate, this give some wiggle room to ease install. check clearance between your new plate and the oil pan--you want NO contact, otherwise engine motion tends to wear holes in the pan....

as to thickness, 1/8" is minimal, 3/8 is better. you may find that small sheets cost big money, it's often not much more $ just to get the pre-built plates from Primitive or Rally Armor. fabbing your own will probly take way more time than you think, but it's still fun.

Thanks for the info! I got the measurement pic off of this dirty impreza thread, which may have more info as well.

I also remember trying to test fit one of RezPunk's Primative wrx skids on my car. The headers on the 2.5RS are lower than wrx headers, so you have to use spacers to get them to clear.

I'd just buy one of the premade ones but money's tight. Fabrication shouldn't be too much of an issue since I've got more time than money. Materials cost is what is the killer. Only way around that is to get creative with materials. I know I've got some metal kicking around my folks garage, just have to measure it up to see if it's big enough.

Will that sketch you posted fit a '99 OBS?

The dirty impreza thread covered that. They're not sure it will fit a GC. the measurements are for an 04wrx, so even I'm gonna have to tweak it to clear my headers.
