das GL!

Put a new clutch in the GL today. I had to remove the swinging park bench and park my car under it's mount points to hoist the motor out.

That was the easiest damn clutch job ever. If anyone says a GL is hard the change the clutch on... Go work on a transverse V6 chevy

Glad you got it done!! They are very easy to do, even easier when it's an EA81 in an EA82 car!!

I pulled the radiator out, because it was easier to take the two rad bolts out than the 4 fan bolts. I had a good 8" room between the engine and the AC condenser. It's crazy.

I'm glad I tore into it, and surprised it wasn't making any bad noises.

The TOB had a ridiculous amount of play, and the bearings sounded terrible. The pilot bearing was completely gritty and was missing one of the seals on it. Yikes!!

I "re-surfaced" the flywheel with same 60 grit sand paper. Got it nice and shiny and all scored up. It had perfect engagement before with no chattering or anything bad like that. So it works fine. That was good advice not to get a new one.

Oh, and I almost forgot.

Went to fire up the car, it ran for about 5 seconds and died... I figured it was air in the fuel system, tried again, fired up, died. WTF?

Start it up and hit the gas to keep it running... gas pedal goes to floor. Oops. Connect throttle cable, connect hose going to IACV...... Fire it up... It runs! yay..... That pissed me off for a minute.

Ya but it sucked because if I spilled any coolant, grease, etc on those nice white rocks or nice white concrete... My life would probably come to an end.

I thought all subarus had a M10x1.25 exhaust stud... apparently not mine. It looks like 10x1.50.... Mom's outback is warming up for another trip to town.... I hate cars sometimes.

In other news, my GL has a nice set of winterforces. Which has also prompted me to dick with my camber and toe. Now somewhat proper on both front and back.

OH, and, napa axles still suck. The one I bought it MD is still clicking.... just like it did right out of my box. It's also still leaking grease out of the boot seal on the DOJ. Am I really supposed to re-seal axles brand new out of the box? retarded...

I know I can take it back. I'm just farking sick of napa axles. One side clicked out of the box, the other one is leaking. I need to break down and just get EMPI/ OEM ones.

The exhaust holes are actually 3/8-16 threads. Someone at some point made them that thread. Look heli-coiled, but maybe it's just tapped. It's so oily on the bottom of the engine it's hard to tell. Regardless, whomever did that did a good job because the right sized studs threaded right in nice and happy. Now with no more exhaust leaks.

They must have changed something with the axles since I used to get them. I always bought those NAPA Max Drive axles and they would never fail, but it seems since you have had it, you have put a few in it. Sucks, they can't seem to make anything last!

Yea, and I even took the washer part of the front lift out when the axle blew up on me in MD in hopes that would make them happier. Which, it seems to. I haven't had any boots rip. Except the one leaking, which is BS. But yet the click persists :|

My camber is good, toe is good, ball joints are fine. All engine and transmission mounts are tight and straight. Nothing is wrong that should cause them to blow. I'm just looking out for stock axles I can clean out and reboot, then I should be fine.

So today I was jacking up the front end of my car to check something. The wheel just came off the ground and CRUNCH. The jack went all the way through the rocker panel to the bottom of the door sill

GL is rusted to hell, I'm not sure if it'll be able to live much longer. Everyone... be on the lookout for a nice GL wagon for me

1. I would never be so stupid as to go under a car held up solely by a spare tire jack. ESPECIALLY my custom modified one...

2. I put jack stands under the uni-body frame things that are very nice and solid (still) before I think about getting under a car.

3. I don't want your car's old shell for the same reason you don't want it

Rockers are replaceable. The unibody is still good, and the frame rails are still good. Just weld new sheet metal on. It's a shame to let it go so easy! You haven't done any body work to it since you got it, except the riveted on patches on the back. So might as well start somewhere. This is what Maine winters and not enough baths do to cars. And this is why there aren't any clean old Subarus left around here. I'll keep an eye out for a clean body.

A two-door hatch would be my dream... But HAHA I'll never find one of those...

Ya, I can put new rockers on I guess. I just hate that sort of work.

I give it baths weekly, put oil on it, etc. There must be a place water got in and rusted from the inside of the rocker out.

It's the salt water bath of the roads that's getting to it... bath salts..... bad for you

Yeah body work does suck. I agree there. But the car really isn't that bad. 2 door hatch, are you referring to the 80's EA81 hatch? That would be cool. And with a custom driveshaft, the 5 spd dual range would fit!

And yes bath salts very bad for you! Haha

Put in a new front wheel bearing. It could have gone better, but the converse of that statement is also true. Therefor it was a success.

I was going to do both sides, just because. If something goes wrong on one side I replace both. BUT one of the bearings was bad out of the box. Which really pisses me off. But anyway, I didn't get to do the other side.

Got everything ready for the transmission swap. All the bolts turn, which is good! I was particularly worried about the x-member bolts because those mean serious issue if they don't move.

The shift linkage on the new transmission was frozen up, but I took it all apart and got it freed up. Which is good, the bushings on the linkage in the car now are garbage. I've never seen so much shifter slop, so this should be considerably better.

I also figured out what each of the tranny sensors are, reverse, neutral, 4wd, and lo range. So at some point I can hook all those up when I swap in the 4wd dash.

I then went to pull the VSS out of my EJ 5speed so I can hook up a digital speedo from a legacy with a converter box. But I forgot that my tranny is 94 impreza, so no VSS. Still looking for one of them. I guess putting it in after the transmission is in isn't really a big deal, I got the stupid plastic nut out they use with the cable speedo. Those are wicked hard to get out in car. I'll just put a plug in the hole, not like I've ever had a speedo before anyway....

I also got a floor jack! Crappy old thing, it drops slowly, but it's better than no floor jack. So as soon as it gets above freezing for a few hours I'll throw 'er in! All in all, it looks pretty easy.

Tomorrow is supposed to be above freezing, so if I put the car in the garage tonight, then run the heater an hour before I start work. It should be 45-50 in there. Which is wonderful.

Then I can bring the Legacy down the hill.... hopefully that's quick and easy so I can have something to drive while I do rust work on the GL.
