das GL!

So the whole way from Augusta to Orono I was at WOT. On the flats it went about 80, slower on the hills. I let off the gas a bit down the steeper hills. But for the most part I was at WOT for 75 miles. Car didn't seem to care.
That's like me driving through the Rockies with a full car. WOT in 5th gear wasn't even enough for the uphills...

Are your tires taller than they came from the factory?

Thanks dan!! I love this little car.

Yes, by about 30 sizes. I used 4th gear the whole way. 5th was useless. It's happy turning 4k rpms. It's a little engine, that's what it was designed to do.

Home made hitch mount bike rack.

Padding to come. Yes, I've been painting things lately.

It's not like that bike isn't beat to hell ... but yes. It shall get padded.

So, for the first time in over two years of owning this car. One key works in all the locks. And all the locks work.

I took apart the original ignition. Replaced one of the wafers and got the stuck bit of key out. Put it back together with some JB weld and bolted it in.

On to the trunk which used to open with a screw driver. The faceplate of the lock was all banged up. Straightened that out.

I took that cylinder apart. MUCH EASIER THAN AN IGNITION!!. Had to buy three wafers from a local lock smith, I filed them to the original profile. Cleaned the whole thing up, and bingo! It works again.

I hate working with locks, I have terrible fine motor coordination. And they're little fiddly things. BUT, all my locks work now. Which is awesome.

I should have taken pictures. But I didn't. Sorry... My legacy needs an ignition overhaul one of these days, maybe I'll document that one. Same exact cylinder as on a GL.

So tomorrow or the next day the GL is going into hibernation for who knows how long :/

Gonna park it up my driveway off sorta in the woods.

Full tank of high octane stabilized fuel.

Change the oil to some good oil. Crank it over a bit to circulate the new oil. Fogging oil down the plug holes.

Car up on blocks to unload the suspension and tires.

I'll take the battery and store it in the basement in hopes it will still be good next time I'm back and want to get the car out of hibernation.

And whatever else I can think to help an old suby rest while I'm gone.

I'm gonna miss the beast so I'll do whatever I can to help it's hibernation.

you probably know this..but it came to my mind, check the antifreeze to make sure its good for like -40 deg. or so!

Yea, I should really completely change the coolant, I may add that to my list. I think I have enough antifreeze laying around in half full bottles anyway...

set the battery on something other than concrete, like wood or rubber or plastic. For some reason, it will just drain the life out of it.

I'm gonna put it in the room with the gigantic batteries that run the house, so it should be right cozy

GRUMBLE!

So I went to winterize my GL for sitting a while when I'm gone.

I pulled the plugs to spray that fogger stuff in the cylinders. The driver side ones threaded out faster than the pass side ones, and they didn't thread out at all by hand, I had to use a wrench to get them the whole way out. BAD SIGN!

I've never had the plugs out of this before...

So the gap on all the plugs was a bit excessive and since I already had a set of new plugs sitting on the shelf I decided to throw them in.

It appeared they weren't put in before with anti-seize, so I put a dab on the threads and put them in... pass side went fine.

Driver side... ergh. They only thread in half way, wtf.

So upon further inspection, half the threads on the driver side plugs were rusted... the crush washer wasn't up against the plug, the washer was rusty and where it's supposed to touch the plug is rusty. Furthermore, the seat in the head that's usually shiny when you pull out a plug is covered in grime.

Stuck my finger in the hole (NOT what she said) and the threads feel all buggered up. I don't think these were ever threaded all the way in.

Unfortunately I only had one insert, so I ordered more at the parts store that I'll get tomorrow morning. Stuff like this sucks...

Fortunately EA81 makes it wicked easy to access the plugs, I've had to do this on an ej22 and it isn't as fun.

yeah I definitely did not use never seize, never have. And I would have remembered them not going in properly, especially after the issues I had with a plug on my RS! So just out of curiosity...........why didn't you pull the plugs when you hydrolocked it?

So after driving around a bit with the two plugs in all the way, and new plugs that don't have gigantic gaps. Holy god! It runs better than it ever has before, I can now go up hills in 5th gear I usually had to shift to 4th to keep constant speed.

This is one of those cases where new plugs give you more power. Good to hear everything worked out.
Older cars with primitive fuel injection and distributors respond a lot better to tune ups than newer cars do.

The computer on a newer car can better compensate for something being a bit off, this old computer system is little more than an electronic carburetor. Very simple, but it doesn't react so well to something not being just the way it expects.

It's just an 8-bit computer. hahaha.

But I have to say, the FI system is bullet-proof. It's so simple it just doesn't have a lot of things to go wrong.

So I guess I never updated on here what's gone on with my GL.

On the drive from ME to NC I blew up an axle in MD somewhere in a town called Bel Air.

It was about 1Am on the highway, I took the next exit and spent a restless night in a parking lot of a strip mall that's under construction. I was worried... How will I fix this? Will I get robbed and shot? Taken to jail for spending the night in a parking lot.... etc.

Next day I found a napa in the phone book I borrowed from a gas station, they got the part at 1.

Fortunately I decided to bring my motorized bicycle with me, so that did a good job of getting me to the napa and back, then to walmart to get jack stands. I forgot my blocks of wood, so I had to make due with jack stands.... Something I've never had before, and never though I'd buy.

I went to work in the parking lot fixing it.

Got the axle out, after it cooled the DOJ actually pretty much totally seized, trying to drive it caused massive amount of transmission shaking back and forth, the shifter was dancing.

Stupid LOVING axle.

Got it in and was back on my way.

Showed up at about 11.00 on Wednesday and worked till 6, found out where I was living. Moved in and worked 11 hour days, until finally I got a day off toady.

Went driving around and Rusty found a strange tree... Seeing as it's never been registered south of Bremen, ME... It may not have ever seen one of these before.

Oh, and a picture of the boat I'm working on being loaded into a gigantic building. It's an 85' long boat, the tires on that lift are over 5' tall... Just for some perspective.
