das GL!

So I broke an axle toward the end. Just put it in 4wd and it kept going home... Unfortunately (for some retarded reason) the brake pad decided it was going to follow suit and commit suicide too. So I'll need front brake pads. Monday I'll get that and my warranty axle, should be good to go! Yay. I love my old suby.

(Jason didn't get off without breaking his either; fuel leak, so I'm not alone breaking stuff

Oh right, pictures.

Umm lots of them.

Awesome pics!! I really don't think I broke anything today, I think that has been leaking for quite a while and I FINALLY found where it was coming from!! Had a good time, hope we can do more of it!!

Def should do more! I'll have my car back on the road Monday as soon as napa gets my axle in. Watch the other axle go next time... hah.

Yeah that wouldn't surprise me! I really have to break down and do some random stuff to mine, and get it all legal again!

Wicked grumble.

Doing the pass side brake bit my arse. The top slide is stuck in the caliper. I pulled the cover off, took the bolt out of the tube. So now it's disconnected from the bracket. But the slide tube is very firmly stuck in the caliper, beating on it will not make it come out, it'll just bugger it up. I put the cap back on, and filled it with a concoction ATF and acetone, maybe that'll free it, I doubt it though. If not I'll take it to a shop tomorrow so they can heat it with an oxy/ace torch, then I know it'll come out.

Grrrr forking thing.

For those of you who don't know how EA brakes work, it's pretty much the opposite of EJ brakes.

In the EJ the slide pin bolts to the caliper, and slides in a hole in the bracket. If it freezes up, replacing the bracket is the worst case scenario. Not too bad. The EA is more or less opposite to that, the slide is in the caliper end, so when it freezes the slide sticks in the caliper. Replacing the whole caliper is expensive. It's not just any normal caliper either, it has the mechanical parking brake integrated into it.

Remember to crank the piston in, instead of just pushing it. Only on the fronts though!!
Did that, and I loosened the parking brake cable all the way, so when it's back together I can get it adjusted properly. Then my fat arse won't make it roll backwards down steep grades.

But this frozen slide thing is pissing me off... Grrr. Hopefully I can get it resolved without too much drama. Once It's un-stuck it's just a simple brake job and bleed. A job that should have taken 20 minutes has turned into a royal pain in the ass. That's how it goes...

Love it! Invite me next time

If Jason got some mud tires on the Brat, it would be unstoppable! Hint wink might have some more grabbers for sale soon hint wink.

Grrrr Garrett!!! I might be interested.

Chris, you didn't stop in the ruts at an angle and then attempt to move, and........I wasn't stuck. I was moving a foot back and forth!!! Haha I was just tired of staying in that spot!! Lol I have done MUCH more hardcore wheeling than any of this stuff in a Subaru and not gotten stuck. I wish there was better stuff around here!!! That was still a fun place to play!!

So I brought the caliper to a local machine shop. Heated it red hot and the slide pounded out without too much drama.

Adjusted my parking brake. Now when you start pulling the handle it actually start applying the brakes, not half way up... I should have done that when I got the car! haha. It's never worked that well.

And with a new axle, no more click click click click click when I'm accelerating or decelerating. That's nice.

I think I'm about ready for the dirt drive now!

Nice! Good to hear you got it all fixed! What did the shop charge to heat it up for ya? I don't remember the ebrake not working when I had it, I remember it working because the actual brakes didn't! HAHAHA.

It didn't not work, it just wasn't adjusted all the way. So when the handle was all the way up it wasn't pulling very hard on the cables. And yes, good brake pads do help the parking brake work...

So for the dirt drive I really need an odometer, and speedo may be helpful as well.

The problem is, even if I got a speedometer cable the speedo would be disgustingly off. Not only was the original auto tranny a 3.7 and now have a 3.9, my tires are waaaay bigger. So even swapping speedo head wouldn't solve it. That means I'd need a really expensive cable speedo conversion box. Probably cost as much as the car is worth. Sooo. I have a solution to the problem.

I'm going to go to walmart and get a cheap bicycle speedometer. I'll mount the magnet to an axle, or the driveshaft or something. Bolt the pickup somewhere close to it. Then stick the gauge end to my gauge cluster. Badum. $15 speedo with correction and everything. Why hadn't I thought of that sooner...

I'm good with electronics so I could probably also use a digital VSS and adapt that to the bike speedo as well... But that's not quite ghetto enough. Besides, the farking plastic nut is stuck in the transmission and won't come out. so eff that idea.

Just took some friends on an ... exciting... offroad trip.

Hydro locked the engine and stalled it in a really deep puddle.

So I used the come-along to crank it out of the mud. Then since I forgot my tools

:gavel: I used the starter to force the water past the rings... After a lot of cranking, the engine sputtering for a while till it dried out a bit. We were on our way.

Got it off the trail, hit napa for some oil and a filter. And now I'm waiting for the oil to drain.

Shame, I have about 50 miles on the last oil change too..

Dad's truck doesn't run right. I haven't had time to fix it. Sister still needs to get POOP to college......

I'm pretty sure that trailer is meant for something a little pointier on the bottom...

lol, nice. The new family truck?

So the whole way from Augusta to Orono I was at WOT. On the flats it went about 80, slower on the hills. I let off the gas a bit down the steeper hills. But for the most part I was at WOT for 75 miles. Car didn't seem to care.
