bratman is going to come give me a hand and beat the thing into submission

The cloud of doom and frustration is gone and I see light at the end of the tunnel! (and pretty soon I'll see light through the old wheel bearing too

)

A gigantic thanks to bratman for helping me through this!!!!!! Big learning curve doing major work like this, but I'm having a great time! I bought the car because I wanted to learn how to work on cars. My Legacy just wasn't braking enough

<<< that's not a complaint...

Do you think bolting the diff back up would make life easier putting it all back together?

You have to leave it out to get the other side apart, unless you take the whole arm off that side too

I'll see. I'll take the arm that's loose to the machine shop tomorrow (after I get the brakes sorted out). If it's a nominal fee I'll probably have the other side pressed too. Assuming it comes off nicely... ... I just went out and sprayed all of the bolts with PB blaster so hopefully it'll cooperate.

Good thinkin!! Hopefully they will come loose. You saw how I did it, just don't hit your hand!!

haha, yep! I have that ratchet I can beat on, and I'm gonna get a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter so I can use my breaker bar.

I checked napa's website and they do have flare kits pretty cheap, so I'm just gonna get one. That way I can do brakes or fuel lines, or whatever else needs to be flared. Or I can loan it out. (one question though, will it matter using a sae flare tool kit on metric lines? Is it close enough it wont be an issue?)

I'll also replace that rusty vice-gripped lump of metal that was acting as a nut on the inner arm bolt.

OH, and I almost forgot, I'll picture document getting the other side apart because there aren't any guides on USMB. I figure it'll be appreciated. Maybe GD will keep being nice to me... haha

Ok cool. Use either the ratchet or that boxed end 17mm wrench. But hammering on the ratchet or wrench is probably the best way to get them, it acts as a really slow speed impact gun! HAHA

Oh yeah, and don't forget to take the calipers in and get a couple fittings that fit!!
Yep! And make DARN SURE to put them on the pipe BEFORE flaring it... I don't know how many times I've forgotten that step...

Haha Yup!! Actually before you cut the line, try to screw it out of the back of the drum assembly. If it won't come out, cut it as long as possible!!! Just to make sure you have enough!!

So it's going really well! I have the new bearing in and all packed with grease. Seals on. After lunch she's going back together, and disk brakes are going on!!

I'm gonna take extensive pics of taking the other side apart. Today when it was about to rain I crammed and put the whole left side back together. except the brake. because it was missing the bolts to hold the calipers to the backing plate... So It doesn't have brakes right now. But that'll take less than half an hour.

But the awesome thing is that I can have the garage now, so I drove it in there. So it can rain all it wants now.

It should all be DONE!!! tomorrow!! I'm going to work on it some more after some relaxation and dinner... The only part I need is an outer bearing seal because I broke one today putting it in. I got a little rough with it. But I'll have that tomorrow.

No other updates really, but it's been going well and I'm wicked excited to take it for a nice quiet drive!

Very nice!

SHE'S DONE!!! ALL FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

That test drive without the awful wheel bearing noise, firm brake pedal, and nice disc brakes made the whole project worth it.

The brakes are awesome!! WAY WAY firmer pedal than the drum brakes. And stops so much better! I haven't slammed them on yet though because my car is full of tools and things that would go flying. haha.

Tomorrow I'm going to cut the right brake line shorter, the metal pipe is a few inches longer than it needs to be so it leaves the rubber hosing vulnerable to getting broken by driving over a big rock or something ...

I'll also pull the cotter pins and see if I can turn the axle nuts anymore after having driven it. They're currently torqued to 145lbs me standing on the breaker bar, then jumping on it to get it to the next hole. haha. The wheels don't wobble now though, I gave them a pretty good shaking before driving.

Tomorrow I'll probably also fabricate a battery tie down, because right now it's just held in with a shock cord...

Now the car is to the point where I just have little things to pick away at, but nothing major. so awesome!

oh an of course pictures, I'll upload pictures some time tonight
