das GL!

That's great. Yeah it is a good idea to check those axle nuts again.

I need some tires for my Brat, something around 26-27 inch range in a 15" rim. I think that's all I need for a sticker. I really wanna get it back on the road!! And then I'm gonna steal my XT6 seats back LOL

If I find some heated seats from an OBW you can have the XT6 seats back. It would be awesome if you got the brat road legal again! It can't be more than $300 or $400 a year for reg and insurance.

Yeah I think tires are the only thing it needs, and that's only because you have the set that I used to have on it!! And yeah, I think I have to do something about the drivers seat at least, because I don't fit very well with the GL seats in there. And yeah, it's cheap to insure

Is there anything wrong with the GL seats? (besides not fitting well in the brat ...)

No nothing at all, I just fit better in the XT6 seats, so I put them in the car I was driving at the time, which was the GL.

If they're in comparable condition I'll swap with you, it's all the same to me. I don't find the XT6 seats the most comfortable seats anyway.

I really wish I had seats like my Legacy seats in the GL. Because I really like those. But with a seat heater would be nice ...

So how easy was the drum-disc brake swap? I hate that I have drums in the rear, even if I don't do much heavy braking. The scary thing is that when I do try to brake hard, the car just can't do it as fast (or, slow?) as I want it to.

It was as easy as, unbolt drum brakes (3 bolts). Disconnect brake lines. Bolt on disc backing plate, put on the disc hub, bolt on caliper, connect brake line. The left brake line wouldn't come out of the drum so I cut it and flared it, the other side did, but is way to long so I'm going to cut it and flare a new end for it. But is a very easy swap... on EA cars ... I have never seen a drum brake apart on a EJ car, so I have no idea how hard it would be for you to do the swap... I doubt it would be very hard though. The worst part is likely going to be brake lines.

I guess I forgot about undoing the axle nut, which is the hardest part of the whole swap. But in any case, I'm about 95% sure you wouldn't have to on an EJ car anyway... But I dunno, I've never examined an EJ drum brake.

I have the guide 95% written, only need to add wrench sizes to each bit and I need to take a few more pics. Then I'll post it on USMB. Here's some teaser pics.

Old noisy bearing!

Shiny stuff!!!!

This was the best part because I like shiny things!

Don't forget that cone washer!

Yeah, maybe if you got time sometime soon, I can run you over to my parents house and you can take a look at them to see what you think. I think the GL seats actually have more cushion, and don't have any tears or anything. That would be cool if you're up for it!!

hey, does the gl have the half sway bar you find on turbo subes in the rear? its on the left.

pondering the physics of rotors versus 14.2 pound hubs.. they are in a different universe. the hub gyros, the rotors get thrashed. A hub leans out, a rotor is neutral..may make for crazy rear end without sway bar or tough suspension.

given the hours of weld and structure I endured..all of it in the back end... I just had to mention this. subaru was not joking around in thier builds. The slow big tread may make it not noticable.. I am one still cruising at 80 something for miles with the old sube...going for precision.

don't want to see a wrecked sube and a hurt owner... if you feel a kick or wiggle at speed (especially left rear).. it can go even worse with no definition. maybe find a turbo sway bar, weld in the bracket needed.

I don't have sway bars, but it seems fine. I'm not flying around corners with this car. I take it pretty easy. This car really excels offroad and on adverse terrain. Snow and such. If I want to go flying around corners I have the legacy

I'm working on finishing up the bearing guide now...

Oh and this pic... I'm all covered in grease, dirt, rust, brake fluid, and whatever else I got covered in from the underside of my car. haha

Ya know, I am thinking more and more that you have not a single clue about older Subarus!! The rear disc swap is a very desirable swap, because it is superior to drums!!! This set up performs better in all aspects on these older cars. The breaking difference is unbelievable, and there is absolutely NO difference in handling. This car has no sways at all, and can still be wipped around a corner with just about all you can give it, maybe some of us just know how to control our vehicles??? And for the hundredth time, I don't care how much welding you did, you still just welded sheet metal over rust!!! Which solved no problems at all, they just made it worse. Sorry, I'm just a little tired of all the crap that you post about these older Subarus, and yet you persist!! And you never reply to a thread you make or post in!! I have owned close to 20 of these cars, and have worked on more than I can count, so it's just a little annoying when you try to pass on false info!!!!

Great job Chris, and you look like you had tons of fun!! Haha

And you never reply to a thread you make or post in!!Awesome! You scared him off and he can leave my thread alone now

Thanks! overall I did have a lot of fun doing this. And that first test drive with quiet bearings and better brakes made the whole project worth it
