Decided on my mods

ok so here is what im planning on doing within the next year then leave the car alone for a long time. do you guys think i should wait and do it all at once or will it be ok to do it a peice at a time or will car run like crap? will i 100 percent need the access port for car to tun right or will that just increase performance? any idea what kind of hp and tq gains i could get?

1. magnaflow catback exhaust

2. cobb catted downpipe

3. aem cai

4. cobb rear adjustable sway

5. cobb acess port

i figure these will give me a nice boost and get the car were i want it for around 2k. im happy with the way the car handels so only adding the rear sway to get rid of any understeer and help me kick the back end out a bit.

One piece at a time. When people usually do everything at once, the car ends up running like balls, and they end up selling it saying it is a big steaming pile of turd.

Considering the items on that list I think you guys are being a bit dramatic.

You can install them all together if you want or separate. The only items that should be handcuffed together are the downpipe and AP. I would skip the cai all together unless Cobb has a specific map for the exact model you have listed.

whats your reasoning behind saying that? you think im better off with a high flow air filter for the stock setup instead? the test results for the cai have come up with some goo dnumbers with the right tune and on my svt focus the cai was my fav mod i did it sounded so good

This.

The Subaru MAF is fairly finicky and very influential on how well your car runs. You would need a custom map IMO to run any intake properly. To my knowledge the nearest ProTuner for Cobb is in Connecticut at EFI Logics. The off the shelf stage 2 map will be a crap shoot if you run an intake other than stock.

My car is an 06,Im running a stage 2 set up[cobb] with a cobb sf intake, its the only intake compatible with the cobb ots map.:idk:Car runs great.

I know that your car will obviously run. What I'm saying is that other than the noise, you're not really gaining all that much, if anything, in exchange for skewing your MAF scaling.

Compatible with the New AccessPORTCalibration Name: S tage2 93 MTv102

Latest Calibration Rev: 1.02

Calibration and Map Notes Updated: 9/19/07

Description: Stage 2 for 2006 WRX MT vehicles with STOCK INTAKE

SYSTEM ONLY and a turbo-back exhaust system with high-flow catalytic

converter running 93 or 94 octane.

Hardware Requirements: Otherwise stock vehicle with a STOCK INTAKE

SYSTEM ONLY, tested with a Cobb Tuning turbo-back exhaust system

with high-flow catalytic converter. An equivalent turbo-back exhaust

system could be used. If the turbo-back exhaust system relieves

back-pressure to an excessive point boost creep is possible. If a

lesser flowing turbo-back exhaust system is used then boost targets

may not be achievable. The addition of any other hardware may make

the vehicle perform poorly.

Cobb's CAI is great, never had a MAF issue.Do it all at once, that's a simple 'mod list, IMO.
Do you mean short ram? I haven't seen a Cobb intake that runs into the fender?

Also, your car has a custom tune. Apples to oranges unless he's driving to CT to get a Protune. (Presuming the AccessPort remains his engine management of choice.)

Cobb's CAI "short", yes.

As to "reaching the fender", well, if that's a must, then duct air either through the fender, or lift/modify your hood.

(Mine's got billet lifts for about a 1 3/4" lift on the hood.)

ESP in NH does great tuning,& they do ProTunes.

Chris, in CT, (formerly at XXX) is said to

be FAR too conservative w his tunes, so I'd pass on him if high power is your goal.

yeah things do get tight under the hood... B prepared for some rubby/touchy marks. My engine compartment could probably not hold anything else at this point.

XXX is 100% correct... tuning is very objective to the eyes/ears of the person doing it: some people are absolute pwer freaks and tune like it, God love them! Talk to tuners, let them know what UR after and what UR goals are... as well as long term for the car. IMHO a good tuner should B able to listen to what U want and put it down in UR car....

I know I now have access to two tuned maps on my AccessPort. One is designed to cope with the trials and tribulations of gas from the corner store. The second assumes I have been stoking my car with higher octane and I am less likely to do bad things to my engine....

Read XXX's siggy very carefully...

**A Word to the Wise: Never modify a Subaru beyond simple Stage II unless you plan to commit your life to dealing with absurd, tiny details
The words he speaks are very true... I live it and know exactly what it is like.

I have played around a lot with all this crap and you mod list looks good but I have to agree with trevor. Loose the cai, if you really must stick with either a cobb, spt, or k&n setup with the box but know your doing it for the added sound. The stock airbox supports 400whp with no restriction.

Next take a long hard thought about the accessport. You dont really need to spend $600 on that when you can get a reflash for $130 from xpt which imo is better then cobbs maps.

http://www.xpttuning.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=48&products_id=99

And I just noticed that it is tuned for the aem intake, so perfect you can get that too.

The cobb downpipe in nice but also imo overpriced compared to the invidia catted downpipe.

Soooo

Cobb(or invidia) catted downpipe

Aem cold air(or stock box with K&N filter)

Xpt reflash

O yea and just stick with whiteline for your rear sway bar.

would advise SPT intake and exhaust, which as Suby approved add-ons head off warranty issues down the line. given your experience with the sticky clutch, are you really up for more adventures with dealers & warranty, etc.

OK, so here's a question in general, NOT aimed at Kristof in particular: how is 300 hp not enough power for a road car?
default_biggrin.png
Modding a highly factory-tuned car like the 09 STI offers modest hp gains but gets you into a (very expensive) grey area between "daily driver" and daily tuner." Just ask STIxxx, topdeeni, Nate, etc. If you are dermined to out-do the factory engineers, then go for it...but ya dang well better know wtf you are doing.

in short, are you SURE you are up to the uncertainties of going down this road?

/mods rant. PLS be aware I'm not trying to be anybody's Dad, I just hate to see ppl on this board struggling with stuff they didn't really need to do in the first place. If you can afford to experiment on a $40k car you might not own yet, then go ahead. If not, you are crazy to start monkeying with a new STI. This car offers WAY more performance in box stock form than 99.7% of drivers will ever know how to exploit fully.

OK, now REALLY /mods rant!

wow thanks for all the input so far. have a few questions.

1. why whiteline over cobb? any particular reason?

2. why the invidea vs the cobb downpipe? they seem the same price and essentially the same thing

ok can somoen explain to me how the xpt reflash works? you dont need to purchase any hardware like the acces port? once you flash the car can it be flashed back to stock if i ever needed to bring it into the dealer?

also witht he xpt stage two they have it running around 22 psi. im not comfortable runnign that much boost. i sitll want this car to hold up long term and while i want more power int he car im nto a power junky. stage one boost levels of about 17.5 psi would be perfect for me. hell stage one just putting on a aem cai they are showing about 27hp and 20 tq gains wich sounds nice to me.

they reccomend an a/f ratio gauge also when installing the cai. i had one instaleld when i put my cai in my focus and foudn that it was almost a waste i never saw bad levels do you think i would need one?

if i get just the exhaust and no downpipe will i see performance gains? if i put the exhaust on does that need its own custom flash or it wont affect anything?

If the downpipe is really a major issue as far as possible problems int he future liek cell lights icant get off etc i might not do it. any idea what kind of hp gains will come from a downpipe?

first liek most dealer performance parts i doubt they really give you the gains that are worth the money and im sure the exhaust still sounds tame like the stock.

as far as the car goes yes it is a beast stock and 305 hp is a lot but you have to keep in mind how much is lost getting to the wheels since it is awd. the only thing that worries me are these maps im lookign at keep jackign the boost way up wich i really dotn want to do. putting on an exhaust and cai and even a downpipe wont ruint he car long term but jacking up the boost 8-10 psi above stock will cause problems.

on my svt focus i had i had a cai light weight pulley and catback exhaust never got it reflashed ran amazing with no iddues. now i know when you add boost to the mix it gets more complicated.

if adding a downpipe causes cell lights and requires me to flash a map that takes my boost to 22 psi then i doubt i will do it

SPT intake and CBE on my 05 rex wag really woke the car up, and both items sound wicked good. don't diss SPT parts just cuz they are approved by factory--SPT knows what ppl want from these parts and they deliver. addition of the SPT CAI and CBE plus stage 2 reflash = NO CELs either just after parts installed and now after 12+ months. !!! can u believe it, well it's true.

Road & Track just ran a story about SPT parts on new STI and WRX. they loved the upgrades and said they were def noticeable, performance-wise.

just looked at price and im not paying 1k for an exhaust system too expensive when i can get a magnaflow for 600. who does a soa approved stage 2 reflash?
