Nate's Car Log

I didn't say that!

I meant you should just drive it for a year, with maybe an exhasut and intake, and enjoy and learn the turboed AWD. Learn the tricks yourself, learn the weaknesses from others mistakes.

Nailman has a 05.
No, no, no, you didn't, that's what I was saying

. I thought putting it in parenthesis would set it apart

.

The only problem with the 05 is that its in Boston... Would they let me drive it back to Maine to have it checked out? How would I go about it?

that one has higher miles than the wrx... but it is only about 20 mins from me. i could take a look at it for you if you wanted.

You don't have to unless you're by it already. Like I've said, my mom wants me to have a newer car so she's helping with the cost. She won't help with older (<2001) cars.

I have a good friend in Woolwich.

It is a shame she isn't going to help with anything older. Because for me it was between a 2001 legacy and my 1996 legacy. Same price. But mine had 60k less miles.

I got lucky to find a 1996 L sedan with only 87k miles though

Quick update: It seems that the 2000 Impreza Wagon is a 2.2L (the owner says it's either a 2.2L or a 2.5L, but definitely not the 1.8). It has a leaking rear strut as well as "a problem in the fuel delivery system that causes the check engine light to come on, and the engine to idle fast and hesitate, all of this is only occasional and hasn't caused any problems. I've been told it's not worth it to tear it apart and pinpoint the problem."

Whach'all think? Worth the look? How much would it cost to fix? (The only thing I can think of for the fuel problem is a pump or an issue with the lines).

Chris, if you happen to be going out that way soon, I'll try to get an address, otherwise it's only a 30 minute drive (going the speed limit) to get up there from yarmouth.

What CEL is it throwing? Hard to say if it is worth fixing if you don't know what is actually wrong.

I've been in PA since Friday afternoon, so I couldn't this weekend...

I need to go to bath sometime this week, so I could fit it into that trip.

I can also bring my scangauge2 and see what the CEL is.

It's a subaru 4x4

Good price and low miles... I wonder what's wrong with it...
Compared to the 2000 you guys are talking about with blown struts and CEL? Could be worse than that, the car could be mint; never gonna know unless someone checks the car out.

I was planning on calling the black OBS but I don't have time... I don't think that the red Impreza is even worth $1800 compared to the black one at $3900.

If you still don't mind checking it out than go ahead, the CEL may not be a bad one and it may be worth it, but I doubt it.

When I pass through I can take a look if you get me an address. Time they'll be home so I can get in to check the CEL, etc.

that black OBS looks and sounds to be as good an early Impreza as you're likely to find. The owner doesn't even know what he's got...no GC series OBS had the 2.5, all were 2.2s. Car has had a munch of recent maintenance, etc etc. If you are "too busy" even to call about it, wtf dood?

you should probably just go and get a newer car at a dealer. it's pretty clear that you have too much indecision and not enough experience to manage buying one thru a private sale. this thread started waaaay back in April, and you still don't have a car??!! this is not a hack on you, just an observation.

your mom is being sensible, spending a bit more $ up front to eliminate surprises, which clearly neither of you want to deal with, or even CAN deal with. On a private sale, ANY problem is your problem. With a dealer, you got some backup.

once you've had the car a while and get to know more about it, and accumulate some-real world experience (as opposed to hanging on MS kind of experience) then you'll have more confidence and the skills needed to go out and seek interesting gems in the private-sale market.

still selling my 02 RS.. just hit 90k a little while ago.. sellin for $7,500..
Problem solved buy his car
I already considered it but I really don't want an auto, sorry.

Chris, forget it, I don't think I'm going to deal with the $1800 one until I rule out the $4000 OBS (which hopefully won't happen, but you never know).

My mom is going through a huge changeover in her work so that's another reason why its taking so long. We're waiting for the hospital to figure out what her paycheck is supposed to be... Plus she's owned money from an old retirement plan (or something similar) that got phased out and her lawyer and her old partner's lawyer are working on that, plus now she's going to get better benefits for less money.

Plus I think I need to drop an extracurricular. I miss having free time.

You're in high school. You don't need a car. The only reason I can afford my car is because I worked my ass off through high school and over the summer. You're lucky your mom is paying for some of it.

But since I worked so hard to be able to afford a car, repairs, gas, insurance, etc, I wanted to get something good. So I spent $5,000 and got a lowish mileage (87k) legacy.

It is a great car, I just drove it to PA and back at 80mph, not one bad noise, no shaking or anything.

You get what you pay for, I'd be pretty upset if I worked hard to get a car that I didn't trust driving 550 miles away from home.

Well I'm going to have to take the car to Washington state for college, so I want it to be able to do that. I don't know about this particular OBS, but I would trust a well-treated OBS to get me there.

OK, so hopefully I'm going to be able to get up to Evergreen some time this weekend to check out the 2006 WRX that's $15500.

Is it even worth asking about this WRX? It looks like it was owned by the kind of person who would beat on it.
