Nate's Car Log

Time to start saving your money and buy a car when you get back to Maine...
Yep

.

I may try to get a job at the carwash which is just down the hill from us.

Even though it would be nice to have a free car... when you buy it with your hard earned money it will mean a lot more.

I was going to have to buy it from my parents if I wanted to take it back to Maine

I'm starting to look for a job(s). It seems as if I'm going to be making a whopping $16 a week doing a real short part-time thing, but I will probably get lifeguard certification so that I can lifeguard (duh). Hopefully a car will come soon though.

I've already browsed craigslist, but I haven't found anything that pops out at me. Here's the best of it:

99 Impreza, 95k, $4.5k

98 OBS, 150k, $3.8k

2000 Legacy, 142k, $4.2k

97 Legacy GT, 198k (!), $2.6k

97 "wagon," 156k, $2k

2003 Leg Sedan, 64k, $7.5k

2006 OBS, 53k, $11.5k

2002 WRX, 116k, $8.5k

2008 Impreza, 43k, $10.8k

So far, the 99 and 98 Imprezas look good, along with the Legacy sedan and the 2008 Impreza. 10-11k for a one-year old car with very little mileage?

If that 08 is for real I'm wicked tempted to sell my legacy + outback and buy it... But there has got to be some catch...

It's most likely an auto though, in which case I wouldn't part with 2 manuals for it...

Too bad, I can't remember who it was, but there was a nice '99 RS, white with a couple extras someone was dying to sell just a couple months ago...I know that doesn't help you out too much now.

I think that the 2003 Leggy looks like an alright deal....offer 6.8K!

Yeah I saw it, I think it was $5.5-6k though, and I'd really like to try to stay with newer cars (02+ Imprezas, 00+ Legacies).

But the older legacys are awesome! they have the 2.2L non-interferance engine which is a beast.

What engine does the '99 SUS have? I found one on Craigslist for $4k but I can't find any specs on it anywhere! (I found a review on Edmunds.com but they don't have the car listed under trims for the '99 legacy..., is it the same as a 30th aniv. limited?)
It has a DOHC 2.5. Make sure the headgaskets have been done!!

wtf! My search criteria is subaru -auto -automatic but it still returns results where people don't post the tranny type

little update here:

My mom's partner at work just got "not rehired" so she's working twice as much, but making twice as much

. When I showed her that $950 Impreza wagon with 170k on it she said no way, then she pulled up Patriot and Evergreen's websites and started showing me the 08s and 09s...

I think she'll helping me with the cost of the car itself now, although she did say I'd have to clean out my savings first

. I'm thinking of looking at 2002-2005s now.

Other than the major interior change in the '05s, do any of them have any big ups or downs? Are they all the same engine pretty much (with the HG issue)?

I may also look for a really really nice condition 2.2/2.5L '99-01 and see what I can do to make the interior better.

If you go with a newer model, try for a turbo, not just for the fun, but for the reliability. They don't have the HG issues that the N/A do. If you go with 99-01, get an Impreza with the 2.2 in it
