VIP in Yarmouth will pull codes for free if your buddy's dad can't/won't.
good to know. I have a friend (the one with the 1999 L wagon

the belt that you see is most likely the serpiteen belt, or however you spell it. Like Dan said the the timing belt is very different and usually covered by a shroud of some sort and not visible.

Nate for cripesakes, will you pleeze go buy a Haynes shop manual for Subaru??!!

Then READ the dang thing! I know that actual study might be a quaint concept, but if U don't know squat about your car, how else will you learn (except by driving MS peeps crazy with uninformed questions) o=0

But then won't it just come back after a few minutes...?
Only if there is a real problem. Sometimes you can get a CEL just from bad gas, or a loose gas cap. There is a thousand non-vital things that can cause a CEL, thankfully all the urgent ones cause a flashing CEL. As for the tick you heard, almost all subies over 50,000 miles develop a tick. Sounds like valve lifter noise, but from what I understand most of the time its the pistons making noise due to the way they are designed. No problem, it natural for a subaru. It ussually calms down when it heats up and can be further improved by using Synthetic oil if your milage isn't too high. Most likely your car wants a new O2 sensor. If you don't fix it you will be living with the CEL, the car will run fine anyway. Just another way that the VIPs of the world can make a $150 for a $25 part. If you do fix it they will probably make you wait and give you a song and dance about how hard it was to install, best thing to do is watch them as they install it, then they can't lie to you.

I know, but the battery terminals are very badly corroded. I don't want to risk "exposure" to undo either of the wires.

I specifically asked while we were buying if it would cover everything that would happen in the three months, and he said it would unless we took it to "generic parts store X" and they said "well, your exhaust is so bad that we have to replace it now or rip your inspection sticker off" then he probably wouldn't do it. He said as long as the car was actually checked out it would be fine.

We'll see how that goes...

I decided not to get the code read because I wanted to get home, and my dad says to just sit it out.

Get it read, there is about a 5% chance it is something critical, but don't risk that 5% ... I'd do it for you, but I live 45 mins away.

Clean up those battery terminals! Wire brush will take the corrosion right off.

Exposure to what? God forbid you need to touch something under the hood on an old car ...

just don't touch both terminals at the same time unless you wet your fingers first!
fixed:D if you weren't so far away i'd bring my code reader and do it for you....but that's a long ways to drive

technically any used car dealers warrenty says they guarentee the inspectability of the car for xx days (usually 30) if cel would fail you for sticker in cumberland county, take it to them and say " fix it damnit"
