Out Front: CEL (already!)

fixed:D if you weren't so far away i'd bring my code reader and do it for you....but that's a long ways to drive
technically any used car dealers warrenty says they guarentee the inspectability of the car for xx days (usually 30) if cel would fail you for sticker in cumberland county, take it to them and say " fix it damnit"
good plan, only it's 90 days for me

.

He said that the warranty would be 100% of costs for parts and labor, but when we got the photocopy of it it said 50% of each...

I'm a bit skeptical on what happened there...

yeah the usually say anything major is 50/50, but if you're lucky where cel would be a sticker issue, you might persuade them to pay it all, or threaten to call the bbb and make them look bad(that works too)

So what is the code?

FWIW, codes readers are now wicked cheap at NAPA, VIP, Sears. You can find them for $50-$75 Well worth it for any enthusiast with a used car.

I agree 100% !

My scangauge2 is awesome. I can see voltage, TPS, fuel economy, coolant temp, etc. And read/reset codes. Plus I got mine for $40 or something like that

P0420, cat efficiency not perfect

so I cleared it, but on the way home I noticed it was still on (I don't know if it was on when I started the car or not).

Whats up? Bad O2 sensor or did I mess up clearing it? The reader said that it was "done" after I erased it.

Looks like we all guessed it ...

When the reader "done" did the CEL go off?

Since clearing the CEL was half the purpose of getting the reader plugged in, I'd think you'd make sure the CEL actually went out... Anyway. Unplug the battery for a while. It will reset.

replace 02 sensor....or employ the famous Nigel Solution from his previous 3 Scoobies -- tape the CEL over so you can't see it

That sounds like a bad idea

.

I'll go back to NAPA tomorrow (Chemistry lab write-up due tomorrow) and clear it again.

So the light should go off without turning the ignition to off? I don't have to do anything else?

I guess I could just leave it since I now know what the code is and that its not fatal.

Cat efficiency huh? Oh no's my car make smoke when its cold and I start it!!! Lol. Sorry, its just so typical of a used car with more than 50,000 miles.

I know, I don't really care about it, plus its probably just the sensor.

I do smell fuel (or something) whenever I'm in a parking lot though.

Or something? nothing besides fuel smells like fuel ... If you are leaking fuel it is probably filler neck. I had that. Norm's replaced it free. (about 2 weeks after I bought the car).

My CEL comes on for P0420 about once every month or 2, but only when it is freezing cold. Reset the CEL, and see how it goes, you might have a bad tank of gas making it run un-efficient, or something like that.

Check the filler neck immediately!! Probably have to pop off the plastic cover thing to get a decent look at it. It will be down towards the bend. If it's leaking, make sure they replace it!!

Well I can't tell what the smell is. It could be clutch from me being slow on it still. Can I have a picture of how to get at the filler neck? I don't even know what that is.

It is the pipe that goes from where you put in the gas to the tank.

Well I stil can't figure out where to put the jack. I looked in the manual, and then I looked under the car for 20 minutes and couldn't decide where.

I definitely don't want to put it on the side skirts, but that seems to be where its telling me to do it.

Either on the jacking point on the rocker panel, or on a stationary part of the suspension
