The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

Andover it is. Hopefully it doesn't rain, I need a good ride today.

Where you parking? I have never parked there.(not since my drivers test in 1991)

There is a lot at the end of Pheasant Hill Road, which I guess just beyond the college. I haven't been there yet, but Mike S. says that's the way to do it.

Okay - quick review:

Lynn Woods can die in a fire.

I got there, got in a good hour of riding, then had a flat. No, the flat isn't exactly Lynn Woods' fault...but it is, kind of. Maybe I've been spoiled riding in Bradbury and around Portland, but the trails there are just that - trails. Not places for high school kids to go in and get all messed up in the woods. There are other woods in Maine for that exact purpose (or sandpits).

I picked up some glass that some asshats busted all across the trail.

Also, I have a bit of a complaint about the trail markings in there. Supposedly, there are blue signs posted on trees at each intersection. If you roll up and see "D6-5", then you look at your handy-dandy (free) map you get (entrance is also free, btw) and look at quadrant D6, and you're at intersection 5 in that quadrant.

1/3 of the intersections actually had visible signs. Hence, Jimbo the Wonder Clydesdale was lost for a good portion of the ride that his bike wasn't broken.

Lastly, don't ever go to Lynn Woods without a spare tube. Here (linky goodness for your viewing pleasure http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Where+flat+happened+%4042.482225570025925,-71.00832939147949&daddr=Walnut+St+%4042.470890,+-70.977780+to:Myrtle+St+%4042.468860,+-70.976490+to:Myrtle+St+%4042.463700,+-70.975950+to:42.46184,-70.98258+to:83+River+St,+Lynn,+MA+01905&hl=en&geocode=6507176789530175645,42.482226,-71.008329%3B2599389198855891968,42.470890,-70.977780%3B5689459485802177886,42.468860,-70.976490%3B5735961833117269273,42.463700,-70.975950&mra=dpe&mrcr=0&mrsp=4&sz=14&via=1,2,3,4&sll=42.46893,-70.99062&sspn=0.035645,0.090981&ie=UTF8&z=14) is the route I walked - WALKED - to the sketchiest bike "shop" ever. If you're ever in Lynn, Massachusetts and you need bike parts, do NOT go to "Hollywood Bike Shop".

That said, I'm going to fix the flat (hopefully) tonight in the hotel room and go for an urban ride in the city tomorrow. :headbang:

Damn Jim, way to venture out.

Lynn, can not stand. Quick story, I was down there visiting some friends from school, we went to DD to grab a coffee, well there was about 4 cops there, and they totally were checking my car out? (82 Corolla Wagon, this was in 1995) So I left, and got pulled over immedietly. Car was not registered, month late. Ooops. So they proceeded to write me a $900 ticket, yes $900 f'n bucks. Well, I fought it, had to go back down there to court, ended up paying $100 and got out of that town. Reason they said 900, was if car is not registered, then it is not insured or inspected, well I showed proof of insurance and inspection. Jerks

Well you know what they say: Lynn, City of Sin/ You never come out/ the way you went in

Jim: try the Fells tomorrow if they are close to where you are. Good fun. Lynn woods has some redeeming features, but a lot of the riding is straight up and down on granite boulders. Ouchy when you make a mistake.

Try Redbones in Sommerville's Davis Sq for post ride libations. They have Bike Valet parking. FTW!

Sweet recommendation - going to try the Fells tomorrow. Now if I can only get the tube and tire back together, I'll be okay. I bought two tubes and some "tire wrenches" from the Deliverance bike shop, and I'll be completely honest - I've never done this before.

Got the tube and tire off, scanned the inside of the tire for puncture-y stuff, and have the tube back on the rim.

I'm having a bear of a time getting the tire back on the rim, though - there's a wire bead that runs around the whole thing, and that's the part that's making the remount difficult.

Any advice from some pros?

Nevermind - just found a good how-to. I was wondering why I got three wrenches in the package. Apparently using all three to re-mount the tire makes things WAY easier

Just be careful if the wrenches you got a metal... i'm a big fan of plastic tire levers.

Heading to North Yarmouth to ride this morning. Gonna do N Yarmouth to Freeport to Brunswick & back.

That's a nice ride. Stay dry!

Yup! I have also resorted to a little soap in the past. Fells report? How was it?

This week ride?? I think I am available Tonight, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday..... I do not like to go Wed, but if that is it I can do.

I think the Rage On guys are doing an urban assult? Anyone know which day

Usually Rage rides are Tuesday nights.

No idea - mom improved a ton so was awake a lot more towards the end of the week. As a result, I spent more time in the hospital than I anticipated.

Also, I learned that my flat rear tire wasn't the only casualty that day - got a slow leaker on the front tire, too. Replaced both tubes successfully, and picked up two spares to keep with me on future rides.

I could do any night this week 'cept for tonight and Friday.

OK - no action on tomorrow night yet, but I'll throw my stuff on/in the whip tomorrow in case something materializes.

Best bet for tonight is the 5:30 Rage Urban Assault from Payson. I won't be there- too much going on this week
