The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

So my crazy carbon single speed road bike is coming together thanks to Josh at Freeman's Cycle Shop. Carbon fork is on the FedEx truck today, crankset is ready to go, carbon bars & stem are waiting... this thing should be crazy light.

Merckx CXM Frame

FSA K-Force carbon stem & handlebar

Alpha-Q CS-10 Fork

Campy Record brakes

Rolf Vector wheels

RaceFace aluminum cranks w/ a 44t ring

Still need a seatpost, seat, & brake levers. Pics soon!

That thing is going to fly. PICS!

+1 for Davis. He's been really good to the MTB community, and never asked for anything in return.
Very true. He is family, but has always worked to help me out, and I've seen him do the same for others. He builds some pretty sweet bikes too!!!

You'll be inundated shortly, I'm sure. I need to learn how to fix my own stuff in a serious way. My bike is the least-complicated mechanical device I own, and it's completely foreign to me. I put on my own clipless pedals, I've changed a tire, and I shortened up my brake cables a bit this year to account for my increased mass

, but other than that, I'm lost.
I think I need to have my derailleurs adjusted, as she slips out of the high gears.
I will post up some basic repair guides for adjusting fixing simple things at a later date for everyone!

How about a little learning session on how to build wheels?

I'll bring beer.
You looking to build a wheel as in putting the spokes in?

Yup... a soup to nuts build. Have a rim, have a hub, have a pile of spokes. Now build. It's something i've always wanted to do. I can't true a wheel for crap but I can build & tune the rest of the bike. I'd be interested in what tools are necessary (obviously a truing stand and a spoke wrench) but the dish tool, etc...

I like to be self-sufficient when it comes to my cycling repairs. Wheels are one thing I still have to go into a shop for and I have a couple sets of decent wheels w/ rim brakes that are almost in need of new rims. Hubs are still good.

I may be a bike tech but I have never built a rim from scratch, that was not part of my training.....figures right? I can true a wheel however. Also you need special tools for building a rim that I don't have. I would earge you to still go to a bike shop for the building of a wheel from strath.

Aww, DAMMIT! I brought the scooter to work, so there's no way I'll get home, changed, dog walked, and up there in time

I've officially joined the single speed crowd... damn near tore my rear derailleur off yesterday at Bradbury. Will be making the conversion this weekend.

When one does this, do they have complete control over what the gearing is? Meaning: can they choose any size front sprocket with any size rear? Sub-question: do people gear for the climbing, or the downhill?

You can choose what you want. For mountain, 32t or 34t is pretty common to run up front. I'm already running a 32t ring in the front so i'm either going to put a 16t or 18t ring on the back. Typical starting point for singlespeeding is 2:1 ratio. If you have lots of uphills, the bigger ring in the back will help. I think most folks gear it for all around based on the terrain they typically ride. After bending the crap out of the derailleur (and hanger) I think I was stuck in about a 14t. Lets just say I got a good workout.

So I was able to salvage my rear derailleur and stay 1x9. Phew. Went for a spin around Sopo/Cape yesterday and everything was hummin' along until I slipped off the skinny bridge on the water in Robinson Woods. Chain came off the front and got jammed between the inner crank arm & the chain guide. ArghhH!!! Almost had to do the walk of shame out of the woods but, after about 15 minutes of disassembling things and cursing... got it. Phew! Trails are ridiculously dry.

Did you see Uncle Packles is selling his 19" GF Rig 29er? Priced well. Has me thinking about picking it up.

What in the world did you hit at Bradbury?!

Yah- trails are cooking right now. I think a little rain today will help keep the dust down. Rode at BBury twice over the long weekend. I'm ready to move up there for the season.

We should get a mellow MS ride together. Maybe a week from Wednesday?

For 5 bills i'd pick that bike up if I didn't already have a 29er. A used Fox fork goes for a couple hundie alone. It would definitely be a good starting point and then you could put money into better wheels, etc. It is a single speed though...

I'm probably out for this week. I rode yesterday and doubt i'll get a hallpass for tomorrow. Have an outing on Thursday for work.
