The unofficial GUN talk thread

You need a sight push tool, and a little nut driver for the front sight.... For $20 I paid someone else to install all of mine on my Glocks. Didn't think it was worth purchasing the tools. Depending on where you go they might install them for free if you buy the sights from them. SPEND MONEY LOCAL!!!!!!!!

Gauging interest maybe for sale...

2010-2011 Ruger P95 9mm. Medium sized semi-auto pistol. DA/SA, ambi de-cocker safety, ambi mag release, light/laser rail, Hogue grip sleeve, 4 fifteen round magazines (I think 2 are actually 17rnd mags) , 1 thirty two round mag, 1 mag loader tool thingy, hard plastic case, Fobus/Ruger paddle type holster with Ruger logo, 9mm barrel brush. I might have the owners manual somewhere. Looking for 300-ish. Any interest? These are 350 new in the store but I have a lot more stuff to go with the gun. I'm looking for a Glock 17 Gen4, maybe a Ruger SR9-b full size or SR9 Pro, maybe a S&W M&P9 with extra mags and all the backstraps if you want to trade plus.

Picture is gun and 32rd mag.

what's the SR9 pro?

I've been overstepping this thread for a long long time but finally peeked in. Is it wierd that I am a man who's never shot a pistol or rifle before?

Honestly I have been talking to my wife about getting at least a pistol... where we live out in the boondocks if we were in a "situation", I literally have no way to protect us at this point.

What types of guns/pistols would you guys recommend for a complete gun noobie? Where can I go to practice? How much does it cost to shoot? The only place I know of that is around is the SigArms academy in Exeter. I think that is pretty expensive though?

Pump Shot gun. ( Mossberg 500 or Remington 870) For protecting your family, you'll be hard pressed to find something more versatile. Get a pistol later on. Unless you plan on getting a CWP.

Listen to Brighton, or:

Buy inski's Ruger. It is cheap and flawless. I am sure you could talk him into testing it before you bought it.

Buy high quality Hollow Point rounds for defense (I use Speer Gold Dot). Take a course for home defense/concealed carry (it will teach you quite a bit about the laws surrounding self defense).

There is a range in Goodwins Mills (York County Fish and Game). It is a member range, but I am sure you could get in after attenging a few meetings. You can also go to Manchester Firing Line for an indoor range that rents quite a few different pistols.

Rumor has it a gun shop is opening up soon in Farmington, Facebook page is Dead On Firearms.

How is the indoor range in Manchester? Im going to need to find somewhere to shoot once the snow flies.

The range is top of the line. They have an older range for Shotguns as the wadding damages the ceiling of the new range.

Wait that's Manchester NH lol bit too much of a haul for me. Hear its a nice place, though. Guess it will be shooting in the snow for me.

Craig, I agree with Pedro and Brighton.

Step 1:

Shotguns are user friendly. A shotgun is scary. Not for you once you learn to use it, but its scary to criminals. Just jacking a shell may very well scare off perps. Even if you couldn't ever shoot someone just bustin a big hole in the dry wall while a bad guy is in the house will make him run off with his tail between his legs. If you did make contact just one shot does the trick.

Step 2:

A hand gun is a bit more challenging to learn to use effectively. I recommend training with professionals or at least a ton of practice with other people who can coach once in awhile. I grew up with rifles and shot guns and it was hard for me to learn the rights and wrongs with handguns. They are not as easy to use effectively as a shot gun. Once you do get the basics figured out its important to keep practicing them frequently, as much as you can, because you will get rusty with the skills. The basic class NRA gives for the concealed is nice even if you dont get a concealed permit. You will learn a ton about whats legal about self protection and learn the skills for using a hand gun.

Check into these companies for classes...

Weaponcraft http://www.weaponcrafttraining.com/

http://www.mainecwptraining.com/

And your local shooting range sometimes offer classes and know whos-who when it comes to firearms training and activities. Everyone is new at some point. The guys at the ranges like helpin noobs.

Step 3:

Many people enjoy their firearm activities whether its competition or plinking at the sand pit or hunting. What ever you do get the wife and family involved and just keep your eyes open. You and/or someone else close to you might really get into it and you'll have a new fun hobby.

Thanks Inski!

I am leaning towards the shotgun route more now that you guys recommend it. It makes sense to me. Like you said, it is more intimidating than say a little Sig 9mm... I want to do everything correctly, so when I decide to purchase a gun, I'll go through all the proper channels of licensing it, learning about it, etc. Thanks again for all your input!

Nate mentioned someone in the greater Portland area was going to open an indoor range sometime. Several local ranges have indoor ranges. Scarborough, Androscoggin, Capitol City, and Hampden. For the $20-$40 per year membership its worth looking into. Some have caliber or ammo restrictions for indoor. I know Capitol City requires lead only no jacketed ammo when using the indoor range.
