The unofficial GUN talk thread

Has anyone on here ever built there own AR-15? If so how much did you have wrapped up in it? I really want an AR but id have to do it on the cheap and dont mind building one of my own.

haha my friend just went thru that with me. He said to go to here http://www.del-ton.com/AR_15_Barrel_Assemblies_16_Barrel_Assemblies_s/23.htm

find the upper assembly you want, buy it. Save for a lower and buy it local (lower is the FFL part). Try to get a decent lower like bushmaster, dpms, colt, spikes, s&w, ect. Get lower assbly kit, assemble and you're done. Theres only 30 parts in the assembly and a ton of videos on line how to assemble your AR15 lower. My friend built his for 650 total but spent the extra $50 for a chrome lined barrel. So 600 for something decent is doable.

Building your own it tough. It requires special tooling and lots of time. To keep the cost down you will have to keep your eye out for places having specials on parts, and buy them when they are low. Honestly I think building one is good, but (to me) it would be more for the ability to control the parts being installed more then a cost savings. You can get the complete gun YOU want. Instead of having to buy something "off the shelf". I wouldn't try building your first one. There are more moving parts then you think. It's not as simple as buying a barrel, upper, lower, and a trigger.

With the market being flooded with some really amazing guns. You can buy a quality factory carbine for cheaper then even before. Buy local! Check out the Windham Weapontry AR-15's. Awesome guns. Can be had for around $750 (iirc). Buy online! You also have some great guns available. PSA (Palmetto State Armory) puts out a new M4 with amazing reviews. You can buy it for $699 I think. For $1000, you can buy it with the same Aimpoint scope installed that I have.

I have dreams of building my next one. But now It's because I know the ins and outs of the gun. I will be building a purpose driven gun (probably in 7.62). It wont be to save me money, because it probably wont, but so that I can get what I WANT.

If you do change your mind and decide to slowly start gathering parts. I will have a factory S&W 16" chrome lined barrel for sale I can give you a good price on. I can sell it with an A2 post front sight, and a gas tube.

poland spring trading post is going in the process of building (finishing) their indoor range. guy didnt give me an estimate on a finish date or rates, but I got a free tour

Thanks for the info inski and Nate. Ive done a lot of research on building an AR from the ground up and it honestly doesn't bother me with with the extra work. I work a machine shop so I can make tools if need be and I love to assemble things. But if I was to build one for the first time I might go down the "Complete upper and assemble the lower" road. But ill have to check out the companies that you mentioned Nate. Thanks again.
