I was suppose to drill 2 more holes in the receiver for the trigger guard. One hole thru the mag release just under a cross pin inside the receiver, and another hole in front of the pistol grip. I decided to cut the trigger guard and weld it to the back of the mag release housing and weld it in front of the pistol grip. that's the way AKs are normally. The trigger guard is part of the mag release, and welding it made it stronger instead of weaker with more holes. And I wasn't sure I could find a nut and bolt combo that wouldn't interfere with the cross pin for the hammer.
Also, the instructions never mention the 2 pinch welds you have to drill out on the bottom floor plate, and the pinch weld at the rear of the trigger guard to get it off the floor plate. Once I drilled the rivets it was obvious that was what needed to be done.
Heres the floor plate of the rifle that shifts all the Saiga stuff rearward. It was flat in place, but I mangled it a little to snap free the pinch welds after drilling.
If you tackle this yourself I HIGHLY recommend getting brand new drill bits, and maybe a couple duplicate bits because you'll mess up some drill bits in a certain size. I broke 3 or 4, sharpened all of mine before starting, resharped a few, and I still struggled a lot on those pinch welds, the rivets weren't to bad. The shotgun procedure is a little different, and I saw some jigs people were selling. I suggest whatever makes it easier to go ahead and grab it. I also recommend welding the trigger guard on. Just a couple tack welds and its beefy enough for permanent duty. The guy at the hardware store happens to be an AK nut. He said the Krylon Camo Ultra Black is a perfect match for the AK receiver black. He was right. You'll notice bare metal on the bottom of the receiver you'll want to get paint on it.
Also, the stock needed a 1/16" (or slightly thinner) washer/spacer on the top rear most screw to take up some slack that was giving me a weird gap along the side were the stock meets the receiver. If you look at the before picture you can see this gap in the 'stock' stock was there also. I made the spacer out of the floor plate I took off and just ground it oval shaped so it would fit on top of the stock and under the receiver tail with out sliding around. It seems the receiver tail is not angled just right, but the new stock fit better than the original stock. A minor adjustment really.
