The Official MS Bike Talk Thread - motors need not apply

I prefer mechanical disc brakes... Take it and run! haha!
I might too. Cause you blow a line on the trails you r f'ed.. I seriously might tell them, I may not be back... Good time to change my cell #, been meaning to do it anyways..
The hydros feel so nice though

and they always work, mud, snow, water be damned, they work. We dont have cable brakes in our cars for the most part ;-)

I personally hate cables and anything to do with them! I wish i could get hydraulic shifters.

cept when you break a lever or sever a line or knock off the bleeder and can't just walk into a store and grab a new part or a new section of cable and sheath.

I have both I like the cable.

See, now I prefer hydraulics. With mech there is more maintenance. More adjustment to make up for pad wear and initial cable stretch. Initial set-up is easier for hyd. Loosely attach caliper, squeeze lever, tighten caliper bolts. That usually centers caliper nicely on rotor.

I'll give you that small parts are hard to get for hydraulic. But if you break a cable on your mechs, you're still f'ed for the rest of the ride. Unless you have a spare with you.

Hydro are sweet. But if you snap a cable, easier to replace.

What type of work in involved in switching. anyone?

I assume you want to switch to mech. discs. In which case you will need V-Brake levers, cables, housing, and caliper/rotor kit. There is a chance you will have to cut your grips to get them off for lever replacement. If so, you will need new grips also. A good trick to get grips off is, slip a thin (1/8") long blade screwdriver between the grip and the bar. Be careful not to scratch bar. Spray some soapy water in beside the screwdriver. You should then be able to twist the grip right off.

Before you replace the grip, make sure it and the handlebar are dry. Spray some hairspray on the bar. install grip and let set overnight. It should be good and secure on the bar. Or better yet, get lock-on grips for replacement.

You know what i want to find? A bike shop in Portland that doesn't suck.

Cycle Mania is the closest thing i've found but they just dont have jack for parts in stock.

I hope Gorham Bike goes out of business tomorrow. After going in to get my Bottom bracket replaced i'm told I need an appointment and that the wait is at least two weeks out. It's a bottom bracket, it's easy to fix, fine just sell me the right size....well they wont do that because they have to verify the right size and to do that i need to make an appointment for two weeks out. I picture a bottom bracket that's broken/bad to be kind of like a flat tire on a car...something you can just bring to the shop and get fixed. Maybe i've been spoiled by bike shops that give a raisin.

Well needless to say i just ordered over $250 in bike parts from an online retailer because the local bike shops are jerks or dont have jack for inventory. Way to drop the ball LBS.

+1M

Shaggin' -

You should open your own shop. Everyone's been complaining about the LBSen for years now...

Better yet, come to my house and help me adjust my bikes.

i just had a bike garage day on Sunday... got my mtb cleaned up, new rear deraileur cable, degreased the cassette & crankset... cleaned the chain. SHe's good. Just need to ride now.

Where's a decent place to get cables & housing? I don't want any of that fancy pants stuff, just standard cables & housing. I looked online and it's like $25 for a full set of cables! Wtf?!

I have a cable and housing cutter if you want to use it.

The last time I did cables there were a bunch of us that bought a box of it. spendy buy in.. but it was cheap by the foot.

I got that.. but I don't see the inner cable anywhere.. weird.

I have a Park cable/housing cutter... but thanks! Best tool to have if you're working on your bike.

I used to just go to the bike shop in Pittsburgh and buy several cables and a bunch of housing. Cables were cheap. Housing was cheap. Re-use the end caps... worked like a champ. Now though... I go to a shop and they want $5 for a brake cable! Arghhh!

Maybe i'll just try to buy it in bulk... I bought a whole jar of ferrels for the cable ends... i'll be set till 2020 on those! haha!

I stopped buying those ferrels a long time ago.

a little solder does the job for me

Modified Urban Assault tomorrow (Thursday) - putting in at Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens by 6:10PM. Evergreen to Fore River, with end point behind the Norway Savings on Congress Street.

This will be a mellow (read:fatty) ride. All are welcome.

I hit the road yesterday after work. It was nice to get out and spin. Tide was in so lots of good ocean views and no stinky air. It amazes me though how no matter what direction you ride on Rt 77, the wind is ALWAYS in your face.

That's because you go so fast.

You're right, though - seems every ride along 77 down toward Prout's Neck is against the wind both ways.

hehehe... ride like the wind! There were a lot of roadies out last nite. I've noticed that they're not as friendly as they were in years past. I'd give the wave and get nothing back. WTF? Pass someone and say "hi" and get a minimal response back. Where's the love?

Road bikers nowadays are a lot of gear snobs and stuck up people. There's friendly ones still out there though. Just hard to come by!

On a related note this stuck up matching spandex wearing lance wannabe was riding in the dead middle of the road the other day. And it was a back country road where the speed limit was 45. Apparently his blazing fast pace of 22mph meant he could ride right in the middle of my lane. What a jackhole.

I used to ride that road to PNCC everyday when I was in high school. I thought I was the only one who thought the wind changed once I started to head back home.. :laughing4:

So nice to ride down that way..
