The unofficial GUN talk thread

No question... 9mm.

Your G23 is already set up to shoot a nice defensive (high pressure) round.  To me the only reason for a conversion would be to make it cheaper to shoot.  Swapping to 9mm fills that bill.  I'm not sure I would recommend carrying a gun with a conversion barrel in it.  Most will say they may cause occasional malfunctions.  While in training or non life threatening scenarios this is just fine, I wouldn't want a conversion barrel causing an issue when I need my gun to save my life.

Not to mention .357 sig is an expensive and hard to come by round.

Only downfall to the 9mm conversion is you will need to find some 9mm Glock magazines.  The conversion barrel changes the chamber, but you can't feed 9mm bullets out of a 40 magazine.  The .357 sig actually uses a .40 magazine because the round is built using a necked down 40 casing.
Agreed that the biggest reason I want to look into conversion barrels is to be able to shoot cheaper ammo, I'm just not sure of the likelyhood of finding a G17 or 23 mag at a reasonable rate anytime soon. It would just be for practice, not a combo I would want to carry. The benefit of .357 SIG, as mentioned, is it will work with the factory .40 mags. Maybe not 100% but useable at lease. But other than having another option of ammo, I would prefer to go 9mm. Just gotta find a mag...

I'm glad you agree about not carrying with a conversion barrel.  Just not safe if you ask me with chance of malfunctions.  And you won't be easily finding any .357 sig any time soon.  Stick with 40, or if you can chase down a G17 or G19 mag do a 9mm barrel.  What brand are you looking at?

Kinds off topic, but won't a357 barrel just drop in? Or isn't it that simple?
Yes, If you can chase down a factory Glock 32 (compact 357sig) barrel you could just toss one in to your G23..  But that would be typically more expensive then a aftermarket barrel.  But I just don't see the point.  I would assume you want to change the caliber only for some price savings of ammo.

I guess I'm sort of lost on the reasoning behind the high pressure round anyway.  Its harder to control recoil, harder to get, and much more expensive.  And whats it really going to do for you that 9mm, 40, or 45 can't?  That being said (and I own a 40) I don't really have use for 40 either.

Little history lesson. The government used 45acp for a LONG time.  When the decided that it was time for a change they went to 9mm and it's still in used today.  Law enforcement sort of followed suit, but eventually decided it had made a mistake in swapping to 9mm and wanted something "more effective".  Instead of admitting that they should have stayed with 45acp and not having to follow Geneva convention they designed the 10mm.  A huge nasty fat bullet that require a BIG gun to use.  Soon after that realize that nasty recoil and big guns mean more missing and they  decided to shorten the round and call it .40S&W.  Its essentially a shortened 10mm.

Moral of the story, I love me some 9mm or 45.

I think I am picking up an SKS tomorrow night. More than I want to pay, but still cheaper than most of them I am finding for sale, and it's within 20 minutes from my place.

Yah.. I'm with you.  I think the sacrifice of ammo capacity, a touch more recoil, and the fact that if it cost more to train, some might just not train, puts it lower of my list of wants in a gun.  Not to mention when it comes to penetration you actually get more out of a hotter 9mm load then the bigger bullets.  There is a reason the military shoots 9mm.  They of course are shooting full metal jacketed ammo per Nato spec.  But try to shoot a 45acp through a car door.  It just might not make it.  A 9mm will.

I don't have the funds for another one... On a related note, wallet world has a 3 box limit on ammo now, so 2 of .40 and one for.22mag and I'm done for the day...

I'm now the owner of an SKS! It's in great shape, very well cared for. Has stock 10rd mag, and a Tapco 20rd mag. Sling, bayonet, and about 50rds of ammo. Should be a fun gun.

Sounds cool.  I bet you'll have a ton of fun.

Muddy, I just got 2 g17 mags today at Up in Arms.  Not official glock mags, they are Korean.  $25 each, new

They have any 15rd mags for a .40 smith&wesson?

I just ordered a few goodies for my new SKS. Might take a while to get here though.

Pic of my SKS. I removed the stock mag and put the 20rd Tapco mag in. Previous owner said he never had a jam with this mag, but the aftermarket metal ones he did.

I love the simplicity of this gun too. So few steps to have it disassembled.

Nice rifle Jason.

I'll have a sight pusher and front sight tool for Glock by the end on the week I think.  Anyone interested in getting some sights?
